On March 25, 2001, I purchased a Maxtor 30GB hard drive, which had an advertised $30 rebate, from Best Buy in Culver City, CA. On the box of the hard drive, there was a sticker with a $50 rebate from Maxtor if you also purchased the ATA 100 controller card. (Best Buy does not sell the controller card, so I bought it somewhere else.) Both rebates want the original UPC code from the hard drive as proof of purchase. Maxtors rebate has been going for months and expires on March 31st.

All Best Buy had to do was run their rebate ad on Sunday, April 1st and there would be no problem. But they didnt, so there is a problem. (All someone from Best Buy had to do was look at the box.)

I contacted both Maxtor and Best Buy about this overlap and they both told me they require the original UPC from the hard drive and that I had to choose which rebate I wanted. I dont feel I should choose; I am entitled to both. Nowhere does it say rebates cannot be combined. One rebate is for the hard drive; one rebate is for the controller card. Two different items; two different purchases; two different rebates from two different companies. Best Buy caused this problem by overlapping Maxtors rebate so Best Buy should take a copy of the UPC. Best Buy informed me that their rebate center will not honor a copy UPC. That I understand because I am sure the rebate center is contracted by Best Buy and they have their own rules.

I told them that since they caused the problem, Best Buys corporate office, not rebate center, should honor the rebate and I would be more than happy to send the information to the corporate office. Again, I was told they would not accept a copy UPC and that I would have to choose.

I told Best Buy that I know I am not the only person who purchased this hard drive and I am sure they will have more of the same complaints. I told them they should make an exception regarding this $30 Maxtor hard drive rebate since they caused the confusion.

I cannot believe Best Buy is being so rigid! Dont they believe in keeping customers satisfied? They would rather lose this sale (I will return the hard drive if I dont get my rebate) than give me my $30.

Not only will I never shop in a Best Buy again, I will tell all friends, family and anyone who will listen not to patronize Best Buy which does not believe in customer service. Best Buy is going to lose a lot more than $30.

I would like to gently remind customers of Best Buy to pay close attention to the sales ad when shopping for items with bundle rebates. For example, when purchasing a computer, the add or tag on the shelf states which rebate(s) coincide with which computer package (CPU, monitor, and printer). Keep in mind that upgrading your monitor or printer may DISQUALIFY you for that particular rebate. I am an ex-customer service representative, and many of the rebate problems I have encountered were bundle rebate issues. If you are unsure about whether or not a certain product qualifies for a bundle rebate, please ask! Thank you.

First and foremost, be happy to get a rebate at all. In no way are companies REQUIRED to offer rebates AT ALL. Second, you stated that you were going to return the Maxtor drive if you couldn't get both rebates (which I'm sure you've done by now). Why? At the time that this happened, was there a rebate on a Western Digital or Seagate drive? Could you get the drive for less somewhere else (taking into account the $30 or $50 rebate)? If you actually needed the drive, then why does it matter whether or not you could get both rebates, you were only buying the drive because you thought you could scam your way into a double rebate? It's common knowledge that nearly every rebate ever offered requires an ORIGINAL UPC, so if you were going to cause a problem over this situation, you should have investigated before even buying the drive.

Report your credit card lost

If you moved and can't get msn service, report the credit card that MSN bills every month as lost. You will get a new credit card # and MSN wont be able to bill you anymore. The balance you owe MSN may appear on your credit report, but you could dispute that and probably win. Take care holmes

I, too fell for the $400 instant rebate scam, perpetrated by BestBuy, with purchase of MSN. I never received my full $400 rebate as with my computer pkg. purchased, HP Pavillion, I chose to upgrade my monitor from 15" to 17". This voided the rebate, but I was encouraged by my salesperson trying hard to make the sale. This was never brought to my attention!! They still owe me $200, I've been trying for 1 1/2 years to get any money from them. I call, write Hp, they send me to BBuy. Also, I never used MSN, never even logged on. I canceled the contract, they say I owe $445, the portion I was not charged on my credit card for. So, be careful with MSN, and BestBuy!!

Are you guy's morons or what? Guy #1: You obviously can't use two rebates for the same thing because the money all comes from the same place! You think that the money from the rebates is grown on magical rebate trees? The fact of the matter is that Best Buy teams up with manufacturers to make the rebate process easer for people. It is not Best Buy's rebate; all the money comes from the manufacturer. Guy #2: As for falling into the MSN scam, it is your own fault dude. You would have saved more money if you would have signed up with a local provider for $12.95/mo. Look at this: (4years*12months*$22/month) - $400rebate= $656 spent on MSN or (4years*12months*$13/month) = $624 I think you can get dial-up for $8/mo with AT&T now (if you pay too much for Long-distance, too). Your lesson: don't be dumb.

Best Buy's Manager and he as much as said "tough"

Rebuttal:
We purchased a Compaq Computor package from Best Buy with $400.00 to be credited to our cost if I contract with MSN Internet Services for 4 years. ( so they have recaptured their amount credited ) as I have been on MSN service's for over two and a half years. We were told by the salesperson that if we ever move and the service is not available in the area that
they could not enforce the contract then, so we would not have to pay anymore. When I called to tell them that I was moving to an area and MSN does not service that area, they told me that I still have to pay them monthly. I complained to Best Buy's Manager and he as much as said "tough" you still have to pay whether you get the service or not.

So you people out there, when Best Buy salesperson tells you something, better get it in writing as now for the past several months, I am paying double for internet services, one for my service that I am now on and also to MSN for doing nothing at all. I think it is sad when MSN and Best Buy
has to stoop to such lows levels.
