1. Open your purchase right away. From your report, you purchased speakers "a while back", some quick math tells us that was FOUR years ago. Any sizable purchase should be opened and inspected right away. For consumer electronics, it is even more important to do so- styles change very, very quickly and may not stay on the market for a year, let alone four.
2. Always keep your receipt. Keep in mind you have opened your new purchase this time, tape the receipt to the inside flap of the packaging. Keep the box through the warranty period. If you need to return or exchange during that time, you have the original packaging, which may save you a "restocking fee" common to many retailers.
3. Don't expect much love or sympathy from any retailer when you try to exchange a four year old box of junk, with no proof that you purchased it from said company. The passion with which you are trying to get a refund or credit seems to indicate that you are probably on the up and up, but would anyone honestly expect Best Buy to cheerfully hand you a gift card for store credit? I doubt it. Check your purchase, act right away and bring in your receipt. If you do that next time, you will get the service you deserve.

You should always check and make sure the product you buy is in the box. If you had LOOKED at it in the first 30 days you would have seen this problem and gotten it exchanged.

never buy a warranty on anything with them because no matter what goes wrong, it wont be covered. even if its that exact thing you got a warranty on, somehow they will get out of doing it for free. my tv broke and they devalued it 75 percent because it was a year old. wasn't that the point of a 4 year warranty. the tv just went out and i wanted to exchange it.WTF.never go to best buy
