After trading a perfect propane tank that could be filled at any refill station for a Blue Rhino tank in May of 2003 I find out that the tank could only be filled by Blue Rhino. So then went back to Blue Rhino dealer and was told I had to upgrade tank to new valve style. When I bought the tank in May of 2003 it was suppose to be the latest design but I guess I was fooled big time.

Blue Rhino should have to post a big sign at their retailers saying that they can only be filled by Blue Rhino so that the public can be aware of this.

Now in order to have a tank refilled where I want to I am out the expense of buying another tank since Blue Rhino has my old tank that was equipped with a opd valve.

The only reason I traded tanks was because it was on sunday. Otherwise I would have never traded.

Now I guess I am screwed with a tank that I cannot get filled because I don't think I will return to Blue Rhino.

I have emailed them on this and they never return any response.

Blue Rhino uses a Trick Valve

#2Consumer Suggestion

Thu, December 18, 2003

The Blue Rhino valves have a "secret" feature so only they can refill them. It's not just an OPD valve, it also has a secret check valve in it that will only let gas out, not back in. Some third party refillers have figured out how to defeat it using a magnet. Guess they want to commit everyone to the Blue Rhino philosopy of paying more for propane. It is a rip-off that they're not warning the customers in advance.

Old Propane Tanks

#3Consumer Suggestion

Tue, December 16, 2003

My propane tank had the old valve on it and the propane man wouldn't fill it. He suggested I take it to one of those PPX refill sites. I exchanged it for a new ,refilled tank for $12.95. I can now take that tank back to him and get him to fill the new tank for $8.00.
