A man posing as Bruce Richardson emailed our company email address with an RFQ for telecom material. We are a telecom reseller and certified Cisco partner. We often get requests like this from new customers and always do several checks to make sure they are legit (credit report, BBB rating, google research, and we ask for a reference sheet).
Everything added up, the credit and reference sheet and all legal info he sent us and all research showed that Atlas Wire Corporation is a legit reputable company. We went into negotiations and were about to order some more material for Bruce to fill his order. He was very pushy and said it was for a rush job and needed it sooner than we could deliver. I jumped through hoops trying to get this expedited from my supplier.
I needed 1 more piece of info from Bruce so called his direct line again that he had in his email signature. I got his vm so left a message. I decided to call the front desk and see if they could nudge him since this was such a time sensitive deal for him.
I looked on the website and called the main number, I got the ACTUAL Atlas Wire Corporation on the phone explaining they have been getting calls all week, that someone has taken their internal documents, letter head, and trade reference sheet and poses as them. They are aware of the fraud, and said they are trying to work on catching the guy posing as their procurement manager.
The documents and material he sent us looked like the company's and his email address is so close to theirs you have to look very closely to notice the difference. We almost lost $20k in purchasing material for this guy. He asked for net30 terms, which we declined. We were going to give him net10 terms as the credit report on D&B for Atlas came back in good standing. Atlas Wire Corporation is the main victim here, this hurts their reputation.
