Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

If you are are a student interested in taking courses at Cameron, there are a few things you should know. Please note this is based on my experience only and may not reflect the experience of other active students at Cameron University. I am a Business major ,and like all other Business majors at Cameron, I was excited when I enrolled and began classes. However as the semesters progressed, I began to notice that the professors didn't really seem to care if their students passed or failed their courses. For one thing most of the Buisness Professors speak broken English, so it makes it really tough for you to understand what they are saying. In fact the majority of class hour is trying to focus on what the professors are saying rather than what the curriculum is about.

By the time I figured out what the professor for my Microeconomics class was saying, he had already moved on to another subject. Every class session was the same. I walked in sat down, and struggled to understand what the professor was saying, and by the time I figured it out, the subject matter had changed. I spent the rest of the hour playing catch up, and quickly jotting down notes from five minutes ago. Homework for that class was on-line. So I had to use my chicken scratch writing notes that I scribbled down during class to try and understand what the hell the homework assignment was about!

I made several appointments to meet with the professor of this class to once again try and understand the curriculum. However the days I could meet with him, he was not available. Microeconomics wasn't the only class like this. There were several Buisness courses that I had to strain and squint my ears to try and understand what the professor was saying. Then there were the Accounting classes. In addition to having professors who can't properly speak English to save their life, we have a professor who seems hell bent on flunking enitre classes. In fact it's almost like he has a bet going on how many students he can flunk.

Usually the class average hovered around a 50. The reason wasn't because this professor spoke broken English. (This professor acually spoke standard English with a country hick accent). It was the fact that he does not allow more than ONE DAY to complete homework assignments. So if you're a student, and you have a part-time job, you'll need to notify your supervisor that you need off on days that Dr. Treadwell gives homework assignments.

Other issues I have with this professor are that he doesn't review for tests, he only gives a three point curve, He likes to talk about his wife and kids rather than the subject matter, when tests are returned he doesn't go over test questions instead he reads the scan-tron that was already handed back to each student. For example: Number one was A, number two was Beta, number three was Charlie, number four was Delta etc. Well DUH! We already have a copy of the scan-tron with the right answers marked, what's the point? Another issue is that he doesn't allow make-up homework even for students who enrolled late to his class.

One student had just enrolled, and he asked Professor Treadwell what the assignments were for the last week. Dr. Treadwell responded with I don't give make-up assignments, you need to read your syllabus". I mean this guy who just got into the class received a zero for enrolling in class at a late date! Other issues with this professor is that he doesn't respond to emails, and hardly ever makes appointments to see students even though he tells students "if you have any questions make an appointment to see me". That's if you can get in touch with someone who can make you that appointment.

Of course that seems to be an issue with just about every Business professor at Cameron University. There are students who do very well in these business classes. Students who are related to other professors, and other faculty members at Cameron for example seem to make straight A's. Now I'm not saying that some select students at Cameron receive preferential treatment because they are related to a professor, dear heavens no. Perhaps they have better study habits, and were taught how to understand broken English at an early age. Or perhaps they are able to finish 50 question homework assignments in one day with ease. Who Knows? All I know is that it was very difficult for the majority of the class ,and the professors of those departments didn't seem to care about the other students.

So again if you're an aspiring Business major planning on attending Cameron University, you should know that it's not a walk through the park to get that piece of paper. In fact if you fail a Business class at Cameron, financial aid will not pay for you to re-take that class. You have to come up with that money out of your own a*s or excuse me pocket. Never withdraw from a class at Cameron University because financial aid counts those classes as "hours attempted"..

In other words if you go over the hours attempted allowed for your degree plan, your financial aid will be cancelled. So NEVER drop a class with a W. Also at Cameron those W's stay on your transcript FOREVER! So if you're thinking about transferring to another university, be forewarned those W's will follow you to your new university ,and you will have to explain why you dropped a certain course or courses. The professor spoke broken English ,or the professor was extremely strict are not good excuses. If you're an aspiring Business Major, just know that you need to find out who the good professors are. Don't take classes with professors who speak broken English, or professors who like to flunk students who aren't related to faculty members. Thanks for reading and good luck.

From your report, it sounds like you are a young person who is still in your early 20s. You have a dream of being a successful person in your career and have a goal; however, you are not ready to advance because you are not ready to overcome the usual/normal obstacles in higher education system. I am not saying that those obstacles are good things to be there, but I am saying that this is very normal in real life experience (in academia). You should take it as real life experience, so you can properly deal with similar kind of issues in the future.

I would like to give you some suggestions and at the same time tell you about a different angle of view point to what you believe are issues.

First, you talked about your professor speaking broken English. I have no idea how broken English he is. It could be his heavy accent that you are talking about. Anyway, in order to deal with this kind of issue, you would need to study the material before and after class. If you have any question, ask the professor in class. Please don't be shy. If you need an appointment, you need set up a time availble of your professor, not yours. Some professors are pretentious, but you shouldn't let that behavoir bother you. If the professor refuses to answer your question, then find someone in the same class and study the material together. You also have Internet to look for an answer. You will need to put more afford into a class with this kind of professor.

Second, you talked about time alloted for assignment. This issue becomes yours and other students. Teachers do not obligate to be lenient on assignment time even though it would be nice if they do. So a way to make your life easier is to get together with other students and work the assignment out. Again, you would need to put more afford on the class. Complaining about it won't make anything better but rather waste your time you needed in doing it.

Third, you talked about no reviewing session for tests or clarify test answers in class. Again this is just a courtesy of teachers/professors. There is no obligation or rule that a review sessiong needs to be given. Most teachers/professors would give one but that does not mean it is a must. From my experience in undergrade, there was no reviewing session for about half of junior classes and none for senior classes. You may need to prepare for it.

Fourth, you talked about no make-up assignment. Yet again, it is another courtesy of teachers/professors. If the class schedule has already been available before the class start, then students should have made the decision long before the first class start. Regardless reasons for starting the class a week after, teachers/professors neither have obligation to credit the work before the time nor allow any make-up. I understand that this is harsh. I hope you will take it as a real life experience because other things along the way will be similar to this situation (very strict and could cost you because of your earlier bad decision).

Last, the financial aid restrictions are just for abuse prevention. Also, you should not drop any class. Usually, there is a certain period of time that you can drop a class without penalty. Normally, it is about within 2~4 weeks from the first day of class. If you drop it afterward, you will get a penalty with the W as your grade. Of course, the grade needs to stay because it displays how you are as a student, and it is in a negative way. However, for financial aid point of view, dropping a class after it has been paid is an abuse behavior (money has been paid out by the loaner, but then return to the student and not the loaner).

So for what I can say is that you may need to put more afford into schooling. If you are not ready yet (especially with financial issue), you may need to focus on saving money first by going to work full time. Plan ahead on how much money you need in order to ask for a minimum financial aid.

I understand that it is difficult to plan or look ahead when you are younger, but believe me that being in debt from education is a usual bad decision by people (and most of them are younger). The reason is that the field they want to go in may not really give them the career they want because at the time they are chasing their dream. Besides, what they want to be is not the same as what they can do. As a result, they wasted their time and money. If they have worked for a few years, the experience may open their eye to what they really want and can do.
