Capital One settles accounts but reports them to credit bureau as charged off Glen Allen Virginia
In July, 1999 Capital One sent me a letter offering to settle my $705.00 account for $500.00. I paid them the $500.00 (kept a copy of their offer, my cover letter and the negotiated check). They took my money and continue to report the debt as charged off, bad debt, placed for skip collection, etc. Although I have contacted the credit bureaus yearly since that date and wrote to Capital One directly (by certified mail)....they still are reporting the debt as charged off, delinquent and a loss writeoff!
The credit bureau tells me that the charge off is verified! The verification process is a joke! Even with me providing copies of the settlement check and the settlement letters...they all ignore it and report me as a deadbeat. What makes it worse, it that my wife's Capital One account was also settled, yet her account is still reported as charged off and unpaid.
Is this a coincidence or an illegal practice??? Can anyone offer any assistance in how to get this fixed? We can't be the only ones they are doing this to!
