I am writing to warn anyone considering contracting Carlton Pools to install their inground pool. My husband and I choose Carlton Pools to install our pool in the spring of 1998. Inspite of the higher price quote, we believed in the reputation of the company. Within the next two years, Carlton had to send someone to correct problems with the pool. The first problem was a loose fixture at the deep end. The second problem addressed loose tiles and two pieces of coping. Both problems were resolved without dispute.

In the following years through this season, the tile and coping has continued to disintegrate. Carlton was called during year three, four and five. They subsequently sent a subcontractor to remedy the situation. By the sixth year, major portions of the tile continued to fall off the sides and coping was separating from the surround. I placed a call once again, and again, and again to Carlton with no response. Finally, I sent documentation of the new damage via e-mail. Carlton refused to service the damage--saying it was too extensive and there was only a three year warranty on the tile. I stated that this was an on-going problem that they already serviced after the warranty expired. The company's response shocked me. I was told, "We never left an invoice so you can't prove that we ever did any work." However, apparently when we were not home, a representative came to our home and inspected the damage leaving with us an $11,000 estimate to renovate the work done just a few years earlier. The initial cost of the pool was $28,000.

My husband was infuriated. He called and asked to speak with Customer Service and within the conversation, he too was shocked. He was told, "Yeah, Carlton never tells anyone that there needs to be waterproofing installed--I don't know why. We can do it for $2,000 OR if you want, I can do it myself and save you $500."

We next sought to resolve the situation through our township consumer mediation group. After investigating and interceding on our behalf, the township representative called and told us that, if we wanted resolution, we needed to find it in court. He was told by the owner that that was the only way he would address the poor construction. We were terribly disappointed in Carlton Pools response to mediation and failure to stand behind their work. Our family, friends and neighbors can not believe the condition of our pool over the past 9 years.
