My family of 5 (me, husband, children ages 12, 10 & 6) booked a cruise many months ago, but my husband is now unable to go because of work obligations. Our cancelation policy allows him to receive a refund of half his payment. However, the refund he received was half of the 6 year-old's payment, not his. I called Carnival to complain and asked that he receive half of HIS payment, not the least expensive passenger's payment. I was told that's not possible -- they always refund the last passenger's payment, regardless of who cancels. I then asked if we could have booked in reverse order, with the kids being first, as it's obviously more likely a parent will be unable to go than a child, and I was told no -- that's not possible. So, they make sure that the most expensive passengers book first, and then only the least expensive passenger's fee is refunded, regarless of who cancels. That's just unfair.

A syllogism is when you explain something with its own definition -- that's what you've done. Just because that's the way Carnival does things does not make it fair or correct. I'm glad you hope I understand, but I've never had trouble understanding what they've done -- I've understood it perfectly, see it as dishonest, and vehemently disagree with it. It's flat-out unfair to charge someone something, say you'll refund half their fee, and then do something short of that. Carnival's system has done exactly that. You and they can attempt to justify this moving-up of numbers, but it makes no sense to do so. For example, if our first or second child had canceled, Carnival would have moved our third child, for whom we were charged less than his siblings, into one of their spots and refunded the least expensive passenger's fee. According to your logic, there's some need to do that -- right? No, it's just a false "system" by which Carnival can refund less than is owed. I hope you understand.

If you book a cabin with 5 people in the cabin, then when you cancel the 2nd person out of the cabin, then everyone else in the cabin moves up one slot...so the way Carnival refunded the funds was correct.  Even though he was the adult, and there were 5 in the cabin, when they cancelled him out, they would have moved the 3rd person to the 2nd person slot, the 4th person to the 3rd person slot and th 5th person to the 4th person slot, thus the prices would have adjusted accordingly to what was originally charged.  Carnival charges a 1st and 2nd passenger price, then they have the 3rd - 5th person cost, just because your husband was either the first or second in the cabin, and he cancels, Carnival has to have a 1st and 2nd passenger in the cabin.  I hope that makes sense to you.  They could have cancelled him, refunded him 50% of his cost, moved the next person into the 2nd spot and then charged the additional funds from 3rd person to 2nd person, thus why they just refunded the least amount.
