On Feb. 18, 2005, I purchased an AKC registered chocolate-haired "ultra teacup" pup from Cathie and Bill Knell's website, http://billknell.tripod.com/puppies/puppies.html (This website advertises puppies from a cooperative of four breeders). The ad for this pup stated it would weigh 1-2 lbs fully grown. Due to its size, coloring, and registration, it was one of the most expensive pups ever advertised up to that point, priced at $2650 plus $225 shipping.

I had purchased a male chihuahua from Cathie and Bill in Oct. 2003, and had been planning on buying a female from them for awhile. The only problem I had experienced with my male is that he became sick during his flight to Calgary, so this time I asked Cathie if she would escort the chocolate pup if I paid her airfare. She agreed, and I wired the $2875 and booked a round trip flight for her on Feb 18, 2005. Including the purchase price, shipping, wiring, and airfare charges, I paid over $4200 Cdn for the pup.

On March 10th, 2005, Cathie delivered a different pup than the one I ordered and paid for. The pup she delivered was almost black, and when I questioned her at the airport as to why it looked so different, she maintained it had simply gotten darker. Also, Cathie told me she had forgotten the registration papers at home and would mail them to me the next day.

After returning home and comparing photos with the chocolate pup's breeder, Cindy, it was confirmed that I received a different pup. I tried numerous times to contact Cathie and Bill while Cathie was still in Calgary, but they never returned my messages.

At present, Cathie and Bill have refused all of my attempts to negotiate a fair settlement with them. They are unwilling to admit they commited fraud, and will not give me any background or breeder information for this pup.I now have a pup which I know nothing about, have no paperwork for, and which may not even be a purebred. This pup is now approximately seven months old, and weighs over five pounds (not exactly a teacup chihuahua...)I have also since confirmed with Cindy that the chocolate pup I purchased was sold to someone else.

Please check out their reliability report at http://www.data.bbb.org/scripts/cgiip.exe/WService=phoenix/phoenix/showrpt.html?zid=27003211. It appears they have scammed others.

They are brokers! they careless about these dogs

Now selling a different pup then the one you chose is a new one. We have heard so many problems associated with these breeders through our LA Chihuahua group. These people do not breed, they just list the pups and collect the funds. Any website that clearly states they are a network of breeders is basically a small time puppymill. Any breeder who lets someone list their pups and sell their pups without even knowing where the pup will end up is a breeder you want to stay away from. If something medically wrong happens to your pup who do you think will take responsibility for it? not the people who are brokering the dogs, not the breeders, you are stuck with a sick, dying dog. Try to find breeders who are associated with their breeds groups, who show, and who breed for the love of the dog not the money as these people are. Just another Wizard of Claws episode if you ask me.

BEWARE: Appears Cathie Knell and Bill Knell may now be calling their company Arizona Pups or ArizonaPups.com in order to hide under a different name

Please also do a search under the keywords of "Knell" and "Cat's Chihuahua" to see complaints posted by two other victims of Cathie Knell and Bill Knell. If you have also been defrauded by these sellers, please post that information here.

Bill, I especially like the part of you rebuttal where you direct people to look at the positive comments on your website. Surprisingly, you do not seem to ever post the negative ones, so this is kind of a very lopsided picture as to the true feedback you and Cathie receive. How does the public even know if you and Cathie are not writing these "customer" comments yourself?

I clearly state right in my posting that I bought a male chihuahua from you in 2003 (I guess you are as good at reading as you are at telling the truth). Also, my family is in no way involved in this, and I challenge you to prove that they are. Also, you do not know anything about the extent of my "handicap" Bill (I am surprised that such a self-proclaimed "world renowned author" as yourself did not choose a more appropriate word). Furthermore, to state that I cannot take care of a chihuahua because I am disabled is not only an insult to me, but all disabled people. It is also another one of your unfounded lies, because I happen to have three dogs, six birds, and an aquarium of fish that are all very well cared for by me alone (while holding down a full-time job, and caring for an elderly Dad). Also, what you did not mention in your rebuttal is that as a result of my posted complaints, I have received several e-mails from other customers who have been duped by you and Cathie, I would be only to happy to post these e-mails online to show what kind of moral fibre you and Cathie have. One of your other victims has even told me how you sold her a sick dog that passed along a disease to her. As for the $500, you are very well aware that you attached conditions to the payment, conditions in which you wanted me to say that I had agreed to a different puppy, and that you had done nothing wrong. Unlike you, I am too principled to agree to such a lie. Also, you forget to mention that when I picked the puppy up at the airport, I had no idea it was a different pup until I returned home and noticed it did not have the same markings as the one I ordered, and that I then tried to call both you and Cathie repeatedly for several days after that, but mysteriously, neither of you would ever answer the phone, or if you did, you would hang up. You both know what you have done to me and others, and how you sleep at night with this knowledge is a mystery to me, but at least my conscience is clear. Also, I think it is a real shame that you did this to me, because I would have been a really loyal customer to both of you if you would have treated me ethically. I probably would have purchased a third puppy from you, and referred family and friends to you. I think your opportunity costs as a result of your deceptive behaviour are really great, and I only hope that you realize this someday.

#9REBUTTAL Owner of company

Donna Chase forgot to mention that this was the second puppy she ordered from us. She also forgot to mention that we hand-delivered it to her in Canada where she was totally thrilled with the puppy. It was only after her family talked to her and seemed to feel she paid too much that the complaints started. Donna is physically handicapped and we believe her family just didn't want the hassle of caring for another dog. Donna also forgot to tell you that she asked for $500 back that SHE REQUESTED and we gave it to her just in the interest of keeping a regular customer happy. After speaking with her family (again), she returned the $500 claiming it wasn't enough. By the way, the one lawsuit was brought by a customer whose dog died after she bought it. She had bought one or more pups from other breeders. Their pups also mysteriously died after she brought them home. The lawsuit was dismissed. We have hundreds of completed satisfied customers. Read their feedback on our website at http://tiny.azpuppies.com You should also know that the only way not to have BBB complaints against you is to join them. We do not feel we should have to pay a commercial blackmail fee to avoid complaints. No live animal Breeder in business for more then 5 or 10 years can avoid having BB complaints.

Further to the information contained in my complaint entered on August 14, 2005, I have since discovered that Cathie Knell, Bill Knell, and Cat's Chihuahua Puppies were recently defendants in Pima County Consolidated Justice Court. It appears a judgement was awarded in favor of the plaintiff. Please follow this link for more information: http://jp.co.pima.az.us/casesearch/index.php.
