CDbaby should probably be honest and admit to people that - once you send your albums to them - they essentially hold those albums at ransom.
One of my works sold fairly well, but by no means great. However, it sold enough for CDbaby to request a refill of albums for their inventory, which I had to pay to have shipped to them. Over time, sales slowed, as digital picked up and dominated where most people got my music.
Regardless, CDbaby asked for those extra physical albums sitting there, they made the forecast, which cost ME to ship. That's one thing... but then, lately, CDbaby has been running out of space in their warehouse and now they are holding their clients accountable for not keeping the sales momentum (we're in indie band self-promoting locally for cryin out loud) and they do this by charging clients money to have excess stock shipped BACK to them... excess stock they asked for in the first place!! And if client don't pay up, they'll just THROW AWAY THE ALBUMS!
So they ran out of space... which is really cheap, and not the client's fault, and arguably bad business, but I guess it happens. But if that's the case,
don't make people PAY AGAIN to have ablums shipped back to their hands!! That's OUR merch, WE PAID to make it, and ship it TO YOU, and now you're holding them at ransom?? Pay for shipment back or THROW THEM OUT?? It's not my fault you "ran out of stocking space"!!
This constitutes a rip off, because the only other option is the albums get THROWN AWAY if you don't fork over the money to have them shipped back to you... after you already paid once, after their demand, to ship the albums TO THEM. Albums not selling may have blame wherever (obscurity, marketing, digital dominance) but that's beside the point.
