Cityspree ripoff Vestal New York
Got several good deals from Cityspree auctions on gift certificates for several local restuarants in Austin, Texas. Several were honored by the merchants without any problem.
One local merchant, EL REY, refused to honor a certificate, after we had eaten and attempted to pay with a gift certificate, and said that Cityspree "had taken their money and skipped town","we lost money on the certificates", "we are not honoring them anymore and posted notification at the entrance". There was NO notification at the entrance !!!
Call ahead next time to check to see if your gift certificate will be honored BEFORE you try to use it. It can be VERY embarrasing if it is not honored by the merchant, which I feel it should be !
It is the MERCHANTS problem for selecting Cityspree and they should honor any giftcertificates! THEY should take this up with Cityspree, not me.
I refuse to go to EL REY in the future and will tell others of my TERRIBLE experience I had there. They even gave me 5 EL REY
Dollar coupons good for future visits, which will NOT happen !

I am a restauranteur and would like to give some feedback on the Cityspree certificates. So the public knows how Cityspree works, the restaurant has an agreement with Cityspree to allow them to auction an agreed number of certificates per month. We found that Cityspree started selling about 5 times as many certificates as we agreed upon. We were starting to see the same customers coming in 2-3 times per week with $25 certificates that they paid $3 for. Unfortunately, we found that the other vendors were experienceing that same thing, we all pulled our business. Now, the only thing that we did differently is that we honored the certificates if someone brought them in, even after we stopped allowing Cityspree to sell anymore, we figured if someone paid for it, it would only upset them if we turned them down. Give El Rey another chance, it sounds like they are just business men trying to make a living and got caught losing money on the Cityspree deal. Please realize, we (the business) did not get any money from Cityspree or the sale of the certificate, just a chance to get our name out there to new potential customers.
