I thought the whole beauty behind having a debit card would be that you would never bounce another check -WRONG!!

An accounting error on my part, because I have a direct deposit of $600 every month, well July's payment was only $450. I did not catch that, as the D.A.'s office does not send me a stub for deposit verification! So, every month I just write in my register $600, as it is my child support check, not thinking that the amount would change! My deposit hits the 15th of every month.

On August 2nd, because of that error, I technically had no money in my account, but my debit card let me take out 5 cash transactions! They hit me with 4 insufficient charges at $36. That is $144! When I went up to the bank to talk to the Customer Service Manager Kelly, I asked her "how can this have happened"? If I had no money in there, then why would the machine still give me money? She said to me, well, if you go to Walmart and pay with your debit card, it will take 2 days to post at the bank, so she was telling me that the computer has to update.

So, then if you go to an atm, it won't know that you just did a transaction at walmart! She said if you would have come to the branch to do an atm withdrawal, it would have told you insufficient funds! What a story, I don't buy all the B.S. She then proceeded to tell me that if you do not bring the account current, the bank will charge my account $6 a day!

That was on August 14th, and I told her that I have a direct deposit that hits on the 15th, could she stop the charges, and she told me that she does'nt see anything pending. At midnight on the 15th, I went online with D.A.'s office and saw that the $600 was there, and went back to the bank to talk to her, and she told me that she still did not see it on her computer! She said it would take 48 hours for it to show and credit the account!

I finally got access to the money on the 17th and I called her! She told me that she could credit the account for 2 of the charges which helped- that was $72. But, because we were waiting for the direct deposit to hit, I got hit with another charge of $36, because you only have 6 days to get current on the account, and were waiting for them to lift the hold!

I think it was all a bunch of bull! Well, this was the 1st time this has ever happened, but I can tell you this - It will never happen again! I will always call the bank on the 15th to see what was deposited, so this can never happen again!

Watch your debit cards guys! This is how banks build all their new branches, is praying on their customers! That is why I hate BANKS! They all rip you off!

Debit vs. ATM

You should be aware (or your bank should make you aware) that ATM and debit is not the same system. A point-of-sale transaction *may* be processed through your ATM network, which would mean it sees live balances (in most cases), or it may be processed through a credit card system which means it won't. You cannot count on the card stopping whne you run out of funds. If you go to see your local branch manager and show him/her what happened, and how historically the deposit has been $600, they may be willing to work with you on the fees. Good luck.

Did you ask if you could opt out of that debit card feature? Some banks you can, other you cannot but you usually have to ask. Also there should be information in your account terms and conditions that may tell you if you can opt out and what to do. Your terms and conditions should also have informed you of the ability to overdraw at the ATM or POS. It helps to read through it. That way there are no surprises. Good luck.
