CSB is a broadcasting school which promises that the student will "learn by doing"- get hands-on experience with radio and television equipment. When I attended the Open House in January 2007, I asked the regional director about career opportunities and salary after graduation. I was told "you will start out making 10-11 dollars an hour." Unfortunately, this is not true. Both instructors and classmates who have knowledge of the radio industry have said that we will have to start out with an unpaid internship, then make between 7 and 9 dollars an hour. I feel like I have been ripped off and that they lied in order to get me to sign up.

In the beginning, classes were about 90% lecture and 10% hands-on. There are over 20 students in the class. The lecture consisted of reading the photocopied handouts- there are no textbooks here. All you get are photocopied handouts. The tuition is $11,000 for 32 classes. The least they could do is give us real textbooks. They rush through the curriculum, they have to teach us the equipment in a 3.5 hour class. All you are getting for your money is a basic explanation and overview of the equipment. It's up to you to come in on your free time and practice- anything you learn will be pretty much on your own, by trial and error. The equipment malfunctions quite often. The instructors don't really teach- they just show how to use it and then have the students try it.

Please save your money and don't go here. It's not worth it.

They don't seem to have enough time for their students/graduates!

They don't seem to devote a lot of time to their students and graduates and I am a good example of this and I've said this to them a number of times and they have totally ignored me and have sent me to the New Jersey campus to get job leads and then to Farmington, CT and that hasn't helped one bit and they lie that they give me attention that I need but they don't. That's my complaint about the school that they have a lousy placement department and this has to change immediately! It really makes me angry that they lie and claim that they have professionals in the industry working there. Even if they do, the "so called" professionals are freelancers and not real stars in the industry. They seem to hire other graduates of the school; young kids who need a job and don't really know anything about the broadcast industry itself like I do since I consider myself a professional being in it for awhile! I think this should change if they want more people enrolled in their schools and they should hire professionals in the media industry! The seem to hire the wrong employees off the street and not real professionals in the industry like they claim.

The minute I saw this rip off report I couldn't help but respond. I am a graduate from the Stratford, CT campus and I cannot believe what I'm hearing about the Florida one. I will say that as a grad of the Stratford campus lately they don't live up to their promises as to placing grads in jobs and are not very good at placing people in jobs and keep telling me there's nothing and they are very disorganized and they have had issues with other students including myself in the past. Since they were recently bought out by another owner/corporation that could contribute to the factor as to why they are so disorganized and they are adding new campuses all the time. I tend to agree that they don't act as a "real school" don't use real textbooks and they should and instead use xerox handouts and expect students to fend for themselves and are not very supportive. The faculty does not stand behind their students like they say they will and are not very supportive in employment. They expect you to come in and use the studios on your free time which I have stopped doing because I don't really need it that often and there is usually something wrong with the equipment that I also agree with. I felt the "drill" on the last day of graduation was bogus and not really a hands on experience at all. I even asked when a workshop of Final Cut Pro was and it was cancelled and they still haven't bothered to tell me when a new one is. So yes, I am very disappointed in them I was hoping it will help me get a stable job in this horrible economy, but it hasn't since I am still unemployed. Getting graduates jobs is NOT CSB's strong suit. It's hard enough that you have to fend for yourself with nowhere to turn! And I've had three internships in broadcasting already and one job as a stringer on radio; and I was forced to resign because the market changed to using an independent news wire service such as Metro Source and yes it is a tough business; but with all the experience under my belt at my age; it shouldn't be so difficult for me to get employment but I agree that it's wrong of them to take your hard-earned money and then not provide you assistance in getting jobs like they are supposed to. I think they should carefully screen who they hire because about three years ago, they hired an employee who had a serious drinking/drug problem and they didn't find out about it until the last minute! So much for that!!! They desperately need better employees who can devote the time and teach the students the "proper way" not rushed and all lectures with little hands on. It should be "less lecturing" and "more hands on" that's the real way you learn!

Reason why I retracted my statements

I retracted my negative statements because if any member of the staff at this school reads my original report, they may know it was me and I may suffer repercussions. Also I don't want to be sued for slander or libel or whatever. I can't afford a lawyer.

Gee, is this another bailout?

I always wonder why someone would complain about getting poor value for their $11,000 and then suddenly reverse themselves, and with no explanations? $11,000 sounds like a sizable purchase that should provide substantial schooling. I believe some *real* universities & colleges offer courses intended to teach broadcasting.... usually at maybe $500 per credit hour so $11,000 would pay for 22 credit hours, about 2 semesters full time.

P.S. This is a new campus just opened March 2007 so I am in the first class. Maybe it will get better in a year or two after they figure out what is going on. The instructors don't know how to teach, you know what they say, "Thos who can, do... those who can't, teach".
