Watch out for "Asian-collection" dvds. Yes, you'll save a ton of $, but it turns out most are bootlegs. If you do decide to save the extra $, make sure you have a region-free dvd player. Since I learned the hard way, I'll clarify: dvds are seperatly produced for 8 regions worldwide. This is done, so production companies claim, because here in first world regions, movies come out before other, poorer regions.

To sell to those regions, boxes and designs are cheapened so they can afford them: "some $ is better than none at all," right? To prevent these cheaper versions flooding their cash cow regions 1 (North America) and 2 (Western Europe), most dvd players are coded to play dvds from only the region in which you bought them, ie a region 1 player will only play region 1 dvds.

There's very cheap ($5-7) software, called DVDUnblocker, available online which will open your players up to other or all regions, but it may not necessarily cover your particular model. (My family collectively has 3 and none are compatible.) You can also invest in a region-free player which you can easily find on eBay. Make sure, though that the one you choose is a major electronics name; I actually just won a nice JVC for only $35/shipping! Take care!
