I went on a trip to Chicago, but this hotel ruined the entire trip. Upon receiving arriving and receiving my hotel key, I opened the door and a blast of urine smell wafted in my face. The room was the WORST hotel rooms I have ever seen. I thought it was a joke. There is MOLD ALL OVER THE BATHROOM, tub, sink, corners. There was drug paraphernalia in the drawers. The room stunk; there were cracks in the wall.

It seemed that the hotel management was monitoring my activities, from packing to unpacking. There is a reason that this hotel was cheap. And I still wanted my money back. It was like false advertising. There was an old man who stayed next door who was requesting that I got to the store for him. The entire place was a ghetto slum.

Also this hotel made an additional charge of $42.90 on my debit card with out telling me. BEWARE!!!! They really could not explain anything and blew me off. There was no deposit, and there was nothing told or in the literature that indicated such thing. The staff was VERY passive. After 3 weeks, I had to get the charges removed by my bank.

I don't get tricked like that much, but this was a learning experience for me. I WILL NEVER go cheap again; it is the hotel that makes or breaks the entire vacation.

That definately is sick. I appreciate the heads up. I never know when or where I am subject to travel at any time and I probably would have been fooled by the name and booked thinking I was in for a good deal. I wish more people would speak up about these types of holes in the wall (to put it nicely} so others would not have to loose their hard earned money that way. I can only imagine how much worse one would feel if they had booked under a family tragedy or illness and had no time to be more selective in their choice of accomodations. It would just add to the sorrow of attending a funeral or caring for someone who was ill. It also would take the happiness or joy out of a wedding to attend or the birth of your newest family member. I sure hope you got or are trying to get what is owed back to you for such a horrible experience. I reinterate what I said earlier. How truly unfortunate....

Christy, I could give you all details you want. The guy who gave me the motel key started to roam the parking lot and then even peered though an occupied room window cupping his hand around his eyes. This was at like 9:30 at night. I thought that was strange. Then later while I'm unpacking it's just happened that he takes a "smoking break" throughout my entire unpacking session. He came of really curious of my in/out activities. So I locked my computer and other valuables in my trunk of my car. To make it clear, this was NOT an ECONOLODGE!!!! This was the ECCONO MOTEL in NILES, Illinois. Yes; they try to fool the unsuspecting clients by naming it "Eccono motel", hoping that they would gather that it's apart of econlodge. I am VERY street smart so I HATE to be taken like that. I hope I cleared some things up.. for more info: [DELETED] -ade'

How unfortunate to have such a horrible experience. I too have stayed in hotels that are less than desirable to down right flithy. You commented that management monitored your packing and unpacking. How did they do that? Just curious for more of the details. The lodge that you stayed at did it have any affiliation to the Econolodge chain or was it owned by a private individual? I have stayed in more hotels than I can count and also with Econolodge. We stayed at the Econolodge at Charleston SC when we first got married. My husband was in the ship yards there and since I lived in GA we tried to get together as often as I could swing a long weekend or on a holiday. We frequented a couple of different places until one weekend we found the ones we normaly stayed at (being on a budget we were limited to what we could pay} had been all booked for some upcoming event. At that point we knew we had no choice but to spend the extra to pay for one of the better hotel. The first one we came to was an Econolodge that had just been built and had opened for business that very week. When given a rate that was not only comparable to but $5.00 less than the second rate rooms we were accustomed to we just assumed it must have been a grand opening special. The next month we decided to again see if we could swing the rate since it was so nice and new and we had enjoyed our earlier stay. When again we were quoted the same rate we asked if that was always the rate or was it due to being a grand opening rate. Imagine our surprise when they told us all Econolodge's in that general area charged the same rate. They got our business until the end of my husbands stay in the Navy there. I guess what I am trying to say is that if the lodge you stayed at was affiliated with Econolodge (the chain) then I would make a formal complaint with whomever it took until I was compensated for such an awful experience. I once stayed in a hotel in florida that was a mom and pop establishment and it was eat up with cockroaches. I regret that I never asked for at least some if not all of my money back. Last I should say that as far as Econolodge is concerned I can only testify to the one we stayed at. We have never had the opportunity to use another one again. If we had then my opinion may have been vastly different.
