Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I purchased a home last year that had a fairly new Emco (Forever/Anderson) storm door. I think the owner said it cost around 250.00, and it was less than 2 years old. Soon after purchasing the home, the door suddenly starting falling apart and separating at the seams. I am the only owner, so it is not a matter of abuse from kids, etc. The door has "a lifetime warranty". I called Emco with the serial number. Their computer came up with the previous owner's name. Being an honest person, I gave them my name, and told them I recently purchased the home. They said "Then you don't have a warranty, it is non-transferrable". I explained that the door was less than 2 years old, and having a "lifetime warranty", certainly implied that it should not start falling apart that quickly, it looked like faulty manufacturing. They stuck to their guns and basically said too bad.

I used liquid nails to repair the door (Glued it properly, unlike the factory which put light or non-existent sealant from what I saw). The door had separated from top to bottom, not just a little bit. I had to use (2) 2x4's and several clamps to facilitate the repair. That repair seemed to have corrected the manufacturing deficiency. Upon installing it again, I found the 3 strips that hold in the screens or storm window didn't seem to be locking in very well (Gee they never really did anyhow). I noticed that it seemed to be missing a bottom strip. I called Emco again, who now had me marked as "second owner, no warranty". I told them I needed the bottom strip. They said: "Your door only came with 3 strips, however, for 54.00, you can have a new strip set, that comes with 4 (like it should have). I told them I only needed the bottom one, and once again - Too bad. So you're selling me 4, but my door came with 3 (What's wrong with this picture?).

This company produces shoddy doors from what I have seen, then stiffs the consumer any way they can. I have spent several hours trying to repair, retrofit, alter, or get this working properly in some manner due to Emco's flat refusal to acknowledge the door may be a result of faulty manufacturing. Now emco is sending me instructions on how to clip in the strips, because I must be an idiot and can't figure out how to clip in 3 strips, but can fix the door when it is falling apart!!!! Clearly, I will NEVER buy an EMCO door. I may eventually have to simply spend another couple or few hundred bucks to correct what is clearly a poorly manufactured door. There will be two things I'm looking for - An actual lifetime warranty (transferrable), and decent customer service, neither of which Emco seems to have. I'd like to hear from anybody else with similar experiences. I'm fed up with Emco. Seems like the lifspan of one of their doors is about 2 years.

Problem with retaining clips, "hermetically sealed" panes

#2Consumer Comment

Fri, July 22, 2005

We bought a house with a Forever door by Emco; the plastic retaining clips started breaking right away, and--of course--the warranty didn't transfer to us. We finally got around to calling Emco for replacement clips (our hardware store didn't have anything like that). On July 5, we received Emco's brass window retaining clip conversion kit ($14.25). The person on the phone at Emco assured my husband that the replacement clips would be easy to install, but it was not easy at all--the process required drilling new holes through the aluminum frame to accomodate the new brass clips! It ended up better than having the inferior plasic clips, but what a headache it was installing the new clips! The procedure did not fix my main problem with the doors--the glass is cloudy. I didn't realize what the problem was at first, and spent lots of time trying to clean the glass on the inside and outside before I noticed that there are two panes of glass & the residue is between the two panes. I was hoping the retaining clip fix would allow me to get the two panes of glass apart so I could clean between them--no such luck. The panes are supposedly "hermetically sealed" to prevent moisture from getting in between the panes, but it obviously doesn't work, 'cause our door is cloudy! Guess their "hermetically sealed" process doesn't last "forever."

Handle also broke, sent different handle

#3Author of original report

Mon, July 11, 2005

I forgot to mention, when the door started separating, the door handle mechanism also broke. That's when Emco identified me as a the second owner. I had to pay a whopping 65.00 for a replacement handle, and it was not the same style "brass french door handle" as what I had. It was also substantially stiffer, lending difficulty in opening the door. I could easily open the door with one hand when I had groceries in my hand. Now I have to place the bags down, since the door handle is more difficult to use and a different style, and I suspect it will break within a couple of years. I called back and complained about the replacement and they said, "Well that's what we're shipping now". Simply put - This is totally worthless door manufacturer. Don't waste your money on an Emco, you ain't saving anything. I suspect that may be why Anderson is no longer affiliated with them.
