In June of 2003 I received a mailing from a company offering to repair my past credit problems and guaranteeing a $15,000 line of credit. Upon reading the mailing I decided it might be a good way to clear up some late payment marks on my credit report.

The useless card

I called the toll free number on the mailing and was guaranteed a line of credit on my new card of no less than $15,000 just like it said on the mailing by a company representative. She told me the benefits of repairing my credit, about a low 0% introductory rate for 6 months, and how I would be able to use the card for thousands of purchases.

Expecting with great anticipation the arrival of my new credit card (also my first ever) I decided I would purchase some items to get me started on a home improvement project that would soon become a necessity. I went to the local lumber yard/hardware store and purchased over $400 worth of merchandise to get me started thinking I would be able to purchase the other approximate $300 worth of supplies needed to finish the job within a couple of weeks with my new card.

You can imagine my astonishment and dismay when I received not only a plasic card but a magazine and order forms in a membership packet. The card had no real function other than having a membership number stamped into its face. There was no magnetic strip for use at any type of card scanner. On the back of the card the sentence "This card is issued by and authorized for usage with only First National Credit.". So now I was out the $37.00 for the card fee and had to spend an additional $300 to finish my project already in production. At no time during my initial conversation did the company representative inform me that the "card" would only allow purchases from their magazine.

In my opinion, the magazine contained bad to poor quality merchandise at triple the fair price. I suddenly realized I had been taken atvantage of and was aware that I would probably never see my $37.00 check again. As suspected my canceled check showed up in THAT months bank statement, which to me meant they spent no time cashing it.

I have tried numerous times over the last seven and a half months to speak to someone regarding the refund of my $37.00. Each time I call I get no answer, recording saying no one is available to take my call, or a representative that cannot assist me where I will have to call back at a later time. I have also tried to gain access to their website with no success at present.

As most people, I do not have unlimited amounts of free time to haggle with a company over half a country away by phone over $37.00. So as many of First National Credit's customers I'm sure have already done I'm giving up the fight and cutting my losses. This letter is my one last ditch effort to let the public know about my experience with First National Credit so that maybe these types of companies can be eliminated from the market and thus allowing only legitimate businesses to remain.

Thank you for your time and be cautious.
