I am the owner of 2 Ford Motor Company products. They are:

1996 Mercury Cougar

1997 Lincoln Town Car

Both of these vehicles have a 4.6L engine with a PLASTIC intake manifold.

In 2001 while in Illinois, I had to have the intake manifold on my Town Car replaced at a cost of over $600. The vehicle was just out of warranty with approximately 51000 miles.

In 2003 the Cougar required the same.

Both manifold were cracked in the front.

After speaking with various repair shops, I have been made to believe that this is a common problem with Ford motors. It's like driving a timebomb and not knowing when it will explode. Any dealer that I have spoken to says "Tough Luck" as far as having Ford replace this design flawed part.

This will be my last Ford product. It is situations like this that make foreign or other manufacturers products more attractive.

Mercury Villager Manifold

#2Consumer Suggestion

Mon, February 10, 2003

I have leased 3 mercurys prior to purchasing my current Villager Van in Sept 1999. I had a cracked manifold on my 1999 Mercury Villager this past year @ 48,000 miles. I took it to the lincoln mercury dealer and they told me it was going to be $700.00 if there were no problems (shearing mount bolts, etc). I explained to them that it is just out of warranty and I know Ford will fix things up to 50,000 miles. They told me Ford has a program where you pay a deductible (in this case $200) and Ford will cover the rest. I was very pleased since it was two weeks before christmas.
