Freedom Moving and Storage

Atlanta, GA 30350

Dear Mr. Ashkenazi,

On November 29, 2006, I was moved by Freedom Moving and Storage from a storage Facility in Pennsylvania to North Carolina. My belongings smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. When he arrived with my belongings, I questioned him about the cigarette smoke, as I witnessed him smoking, and he lost his temper.

During his tantrum he rambled in mostly incoherent speech, which made me wonder what else he had been smoking while packing and moving my belongings, but made mention of how "everyone better stop telling me what to do", and "I can smoke anywhere I want".

I contacted the Storage Facility in Huntingdon Valley, PA and was told by the manager and reception desk that they had witnessed one of the Freedom Moving and Storage employees illegally smoking cigarettes in my storage unit on their Non-Smoking facility grounds. The employee refused to give his name, but he was African American (the other mover was clearly not), and refused to sign his real name to the invoice, only signing Freedom Movers on the signature line.

I am also told he was combative and made racial remarks to the receptionist who is Caucasian, calling her a crazy white b***h when she and the manager told him to cease smoking in the storage unit and on their facility. I am also told he threatened one of the other storage facility patrons.

What I am most upset about is the fact that my belongings smelled of cigarette smoke. I entrusted my belongings to Freedom Moving and Storage and will not do so again, nor will I recommend them to anyone. While I, myself, am African American, and proud of it, I have many friends and associates who are of another ethic background, including white, and I am appalled by the racial comments made by your employee to another human being, regardless of his or her race.

This employee makes me ashamed of those fellow African Americans who give the upstanding ones the bad name we have become known to have.

I will not leave my name, as I do not wish to be retaliated against by this employee who knows where I live. I do hope he will be dealt with accordingly.

Sincerely,

Anonymous, N.C.

Matisha, you might be right about what he was smoking. The DOT's website shows that Freedom Moving's drivers have had moving violations for drugs/alcohol before. I'm wondering if the person who delivered you was named Desmond Campbell. He owns an unincorporated, unlicensed company called Advance Moving (or whatever he feels like calling it at the time), and has been reported to work with several licensed movers in the same Norcross area, pretending to be their employees. He has been reported to be rude to other people who have used him, and he seemed rather confident, according to your letter, to just be a regular worker. You need to forward your complaint on to the GA Public Services Commission, as well as the Department of Transportation. See if you can get the employee at your storage facility to write a letter attesting to the smoking she saw, including the fact that the facility is non-smoking.
