Don't bother buying any of those "protective plans" from any of the jewelry stores, they aren't worth spit. Been in the jewelry business for 24+ years and have worked for several different chains that sold them. The vast majority of those plans require you to go in and get your item "inspected" every six months or so to keep the "warranty" in effect. BS. A well made piece of jewelry will last for decades or more without any work being required. On the other hand, I've had customers knock out stones or break jewelry in a few days. My favorite of all times was when the dentist called to complain about the "cheap" ring that I sold him, that "lost" several stones within a week. When he brought it in, I asked, "Was that before or after she dropped it down the garabage disposal unit"? What they're really doing is getting the customer back into the store where they can have another shot at selling him/her something. As we've seen on this site, several people have posted that because they didn't go in and have their item "inspected" at the regulat intervals, the warranty was voided. What a person needs to do, is have their piece of jewelry insured by an insurance company. Jewelry stores ought to stick to selling jewelry, not selling insurance. When I worked at zales, they sold "insurance" for THREE TIMES what an insurance company would sell you a policy for and it covered MUCH LESS. Most GOOD jewelry store will clean and inspect one or two pieces of a customer's items for free, while they wait. I do it all the time, at my shop, for folks I've never seen before. Most insurance policies are cheap with zero deductable and cover just about everything and allow you to take your item to whomever you chose, not the place that screwed it up in the first place. Like that one post where the lady was angry with the store where she bought her wedding set, but because she had a warranty with them, she had to keep going back and dealing with the same incompetant clowns over and over again. She didn't have any choice. People, buy insurance from an insurance company. Just check to make sure what you are buying.

I know from first hand experience that it can happen at any time in any place, a stone may fall out. Being a jeweler of many years it is my advice that you get a protective plan on any piece of merchandise that you purchase. Furthermore, i would like to say that in the companies defense it could have happened for any reason, you hit your hand and bent a prong(gold is soft and maleable), catch a tip on a sweater and bend a prong back or snap a tip off. It isnt the jewelers fault in any way that your stone fell out.
