I have used HP products for many years, and still do. I have never had a problem.
I bought an HP laptop that Circuit City had gutted out and misrepresented during their going out of business sale. I bought it. Registered it, and then sent it in under warranty and HP totally refurbished it without hesitation and shipped it back to me. It didn't cost me a dime.
They offered expedited shipping, and I declined. They do not force it on you, and they do not make any money on that expedited shipping. Use some common sense.
Now, back to your "problem". HP found no problem with your laptop.
You probably had a dead battery!
No rip off. And, nobody says you have to have a computer to to job hunting. You can do it the old fashioned way. In person! What a concept! Or, go to the library to scan the online ads.
FYI...It's NOT "compact". Idiot. No wonder your unemployed.

Hi! Just contact their corporate office. It actually works. I had a similar (although less minor problem then yours) where they charged me for the recovery disks. I ask for a refund from their tech support and was told there wasn't anything they could do. I explained to them their booklet said I am to get free recovery disks...any who I filed a complaint on HP website and their corporate office called me and actually resoled the problem :).
Here is a link that gives you their corporate mailing address and phone number:

P.S. It appears that Hewlett Packard may be part of an 'organized crime syndicate' that is also referred to as the "hub", according to information available on the web.
If you 'Google' this- WHO OWNS THE FED BANK, WHO CONTROLS WHO VIDEO, and watch it on the web, you'll hear the narrator discuss how the people and the companies that appear in the charts at the beginning of that video are part of this organized crime syndicate, right?
Now 'Google' this- WHO OWNS THE FED?, and go to the site with the 5 charts. Those are the same charts being displayed in the video!
Hewlett Packard is listed in 'Chart 3', correct?
So, Hewlett Packard appears to be part of this 'organized crime syndicate' which seems to be connected to the Federal Reserve, wouldn't everyone agree?
Thank You
