Like others who have reported this company, I was taken by surprise that they charge a full year-approximately $200--if you don't cancel your membership within a very short period of time. I was able to receive a 100% refund by contacting the State Consumer Protection Board of my state (New York).

HighBeam is a commercial research company and disseminates copyrighted information to subscribers. It is a little expensive and similar in nature to legal research companies. The information is indexed with date of publication, content creation company or individual. Very useful in patent cases for example. That is why I subscribe. You think this place is expensive go to Janes military research archives. You can pay up to $10k a year there.

Oh puhlease, "Anthonyl", Highbeam employee by any chance? These cheating, thieving shysters need to be put out of business as soon as possible.

This information is in the public domain and as such should be freely available to everyone. Which it is, of course, just not through these fraudsters who try to throttle access to information all have every right to view.

I signed up to Highbeam Research for a free trial onApril 26 2009, intending to cancel after viewing the full article I was interested in, forgot to cancel, and was alarmed to see a charge of $199.95 on my back statement on line on May 4 2009. I was even more alarmed when I went to the site and checked out their legal form of agreement I had "signed" to their terms, which seemed draconian. It was even more alarming when I couldn't find the telephone number anywhere on the site. Luckily I found it by googling - 1 800 860 9227. Called the number May 5 and a very pleasant and honest sounding older lady listened to my story of not wanting the service and immediately agreed to cancel the charge, which was done in two days (May 7). I have no idea whether they have reformed or whether they have always been well behaved, and the customers who go to the authorities or Better Business Bureau etc or complain they are ripped off are the ones who are panicking for no reason. I suspect they are. I spoke to another woman, Katherine, on May 6 and she was equally decent and reassuring. People also trash Highbeam by complaining that they aren't offering a good service. I have n't examined it in detail but they have a long list of publications they access. They used to be ELibrary which I subscribed to in the early days and they were very good. I think Highbeam are getting a bum rap with these scam reports. At least in my experience and to my huge relief they are decent people, and none of my worry was justified, thank God. I have no connection with them in any way at all other than this experience. I think they behaved better than anyone else I have ever dealt with in this kind of situation. If you dont believe me, I suggest you call theirr tel number and talk to them, perhaps they can be reassuring about the refund question. Just thought this should be posted on the Web as a counterbalance. In my case the alarm was completely unjustified. Maybe they should revise their legal form though, it is very nasty sounding and mae m think for sure it would take me months to get my money back, iof ever. Instead I got it back straight away, which was a huge relief.
