I have a credit card through this company and my payment due date was on May 10, 2007. I went on-line and made this payment on that date, it was viewable on May 11, 2007. This credit card company charged me a $30 late fee on May 10, 2007 --- the day the payment was due!!! Since the company charged me a late fee, it put my balance on my card over the limit and so, therefore; they turned around and charged me a $30 fee for being over my limit on May 11, 2007!!!

Then on May 29, 2007, I was reviewing my e-mail and HSBC Credit Card Services sent me a notice that I was over my limit and I needed to make a payment. So, I check my statment on-line to see what they are talking about and they charged me another $30 over limit fee on May 29, 2007!!

I immediately sent them an e-mail regarding my concerns for this because it was in the same billing cycle, current statement. Of course, to no avail, I had to hear their blah, blah, blah of regarding the terms and conditions listed in my disclosure statement saying that my billing cycle runs from 5/14/07 to 6/14/07, and the first $30 over limit fee was in the billing cycle of 4/14/07 to 5/14/07; and therefore, this current $30 over limit fee was in the 5/14/07 to 6/14/07 billing cycle. I informed them that I have my current statement and my due date is not until 6/8/07.

Anyway, to make a long story short, if I had not looked at my e-mail alert from them and went by my current statement for a due date of 6/8/07; I would still be over my limit and they would have turned around and charged me another $30 over limit fee for the billing cycle of 6/14/07 to 7/14/07! I informed them that there was nothing in my disclosure statement of these charges being applied in this manner; as a matter of fact, it says in the disclosure that the payment has to be 5 days late before they charge a $30 late fee.

So, I have informed the company that I was contacting the attorney general's office in Maryland and writing to the President of the company to report their fradulent actions.

Late/overlimit charges are a scam

I too have been charged a "LATE FEE" on the day my bill was due. I always believed that LATE meant after the fact-I could see them charging the late fee the DAY AFTER your due date if the bill is not paid, but NOT on the due date itself!!! I guess their idea of DUE DATE and mine are 2 different things!

There is a difference between your billing cycle and your due date. The statement you have showing a due date of 6/8 is for a billing cycle between 4/14 and 5/14. Look closely at that statement. It covers transaction for the period between 4/14 and 5/14. Sometime after 5/14 they sent you that statement with a due date of 6/8. this allows you time to make your payment. So they are correct in that for each billing cycle your balance (last balance plus interest plus transactions plus any other fees minus payments) is over your limit they can access an overlimit fee. You are also confusing "over limit fee" with late "late charge". An over limit fee is because you are over your credit limit, which is clearly available on your statements and online. They can access this immediately. A late fee is because you have not made your payment by the due date, which is also clearly printed on your statement as well as online. You should also look at how payments online are posted. You can make a regular payment online for free. But this regular payment that you are making will take 2 business days to post. An option to make a rush payment is available for a fee of $12.95 is available - which is much less that the late fee. With the regular payment option, you can go online anytime to make it and have it scheduled for a specific date. that way you will never be late.
