Complaint Review: I-65 Chevron - Athens Alabama

I was working at the I-65 Chevron until recently. On Saturday 2/18/06 I awoke to a sheet of ice on my porch, sleet hitting my windows and weather warnings all over T.V. My husband and I decided it was too risky to try driving in to work so I called in. I showed up that Sunday and worked.

Well the "manager" who is the owner's wife has this little thing about putting me on a shift I have told her I have a problem working, just to piss me off. She scheduled me to work 3rd shift Thursday and Friday night. I worked Thursday night but felt queasy all night. I spent most of the next day glued to the commode. I had picked up a stomach virus! I called my boss to let her know that I wouldn't be able to come in and she told me "I don't think we need you anymore." I said, "Excuse me?" She said "If you bring in a doctor's excuse I might hire you back." I asked "bring in a doctor's excuse for a stomach virus?" This woman is crazy!

Our paydays are on Tuesdays, so I went the next Tuesday to pick up my final check and the girl there told me that I would have to pick it up Friday. I was royally pissed then.

They had done this to a previous employee to. The "manager" did it just to piss the girl off and because she could.

I called the owner and asked him why I had to wait until Friday to pick my check up, he told me he had been sick and that he hadn't had a chance to bring them over. I told him that I knew that everyone else had got paid and that I wanted my money too. He then said that they(he and his wife) get sick too. I said, "yeah but you don't get fired for it." He said, "Well I'm the boss, and Tammy told you that you could come back if you bring in a doctor's excuse." "For a stomach virus?" He then said "Well, when we are sick we go to the doctor."

I told him that I can't afford to go to the doctor for a stomach virus, his store didn't exactly have benefits. He then told me that his wife never fired me, that I quit because I never showed up. He also said that "You called in last weekend because it MIGHT snow." "No, I called in because there was a layer of ice on my porch and on the HIGHWAY outside my house." He then told me that everyone else managed to show up that day. I told him that no they did not because the guy that was supposed to come in after me called in too and had called in once for a week straight! But he didn't get fired. Well he had no comment for that.

Well he then told me that he was reviewing the security tape from the last night I worked and I would get my check Friday. I called my husband and asked him what I could do about it. He told me to call them back and tell them I was filing a report for theft of services. I did and the owner told me that he had an accountant and a lawyer and my husband wasn't a lawyer and that he could hold my check for as long as he wanted, so that he could review the security tapes from EVERY night I worked if need be and that he could hold it until we went to court and it could take years. So my best bet would be to pick my check up Friday.

I almost had a lawyer friend call him but I decided I'd be the bigger "man" and wait until Friday. Then I'll show my butt! LOL!

I really hope others read this and realize what incompetent morons these people are and decide to find employment elsewhere.
