While visting the city I lived in 15 years ago this past Thanksgiving, I spent one day exploring it on my bicycle. I went by a location that had a really hip coffee shop that I went to every once in awhile. I didn't go in, I just stopped in front of the shop and noticed it had a sign on the door that offered free internet. I thought to myself that this would be a good place to stop by that night and check my email while enjoying a cup of joe and a bite to eat.

At the end of my day, I stopped by between 9:30 and 10pm. I got my coffee and a bagel and booted up my computer. Much to my surprise their network had a "Welcome Screen". This screen wanted me to enter my credit card number and other information. Nice welcome! I asked the people working the coffee shop what was up with this welcome screen and they told me to use their network, I have to enter my credit card number and other info. This was so they can authenticate that I am not a minor was what was told to me. They also reassured me that I would not be charged. I told them the sign doesn't mention anything about having to enter one's credit card number and my credit card info is not free! They apologized but maintained that that's their policy. So here I am stuck with few alternatives this late at night and not considering a plan B on coffee shops to go to. Not to mention I've already had the mindset to enjoy my cup of coffee and relax.

Needless to say I did not enter my credit card info. The disadvantages far out weigh any benefits in doing this procedures. Furthermore it just invites hackers to setup their own access point in front of the coffee shop and gather credit card numbers!

It's a shame that something free upset you so much

It's a shame that something free upset you so much. Did anything on their menu mention how hot the coffee was? You don't seem to be claiming false advertising for that.
