Interstate Moves cannot be charged by the Cubic Foot unless it's a Binding Estimate. And it can't truly be a Binding Estimate if the charges have gone higher, so they've backed themselves into a corner. Unfortunately, there's nothing YOU can do about that, but it may help you get back at them later. What you should do when they show up is offer them a payment, probably in cash, of exactly 110% of the original estimate. If they refuse to give you your stuff unless you pay the full amount, offer it again, then eventually pay them what they're asking. Then you can write down on your Bill of Lading that they refused to deliver for 110%, and demanded $[whatever amount] in cash. They've just earned themselves a theoretical $10,000 fine. I say theoretical because the law's on the books, but the gov't seems to be very slow in enforcing it. You never know who's going to be the test case. Could be you & Jet Movers. Do not sign the BOL until you've inspected everything, and if you have to sign before they even open the truck, note that on the BOL, too. You'll probably want to write very small so you can fit in all the federal law violations they are racking up. Call them every day and demand to know where your stuff is. Call from different phones or block your number (*67, then their phone number). Keep a log of the name of the person you talk to, the date and time of the call, and what they say. You'll want to turn these in when you file your formal complaint. Until the delivery actually happens, though, you'll justahve to wait and continue to pester them. Take pictures of the truck and employees when they come, and of your stuff as soon as the back of the truck is opened. Send those in with the complaint. When you see the inventory list, and they've probably marked everything as scratched, chipped, or dented, mark NOT next to all the ones you knew to be in good shape (but be honest about the things that really were dented, scratched, etc). Write at the bottom something like "furniture with my markings were in good condition before the move, these conditions were added by the movers after loading their truck". You need to go and read Your Rights And Responsibilities When You Move, which you can find at protectyourmove.gov. You'll see all the things that should be happening, and all the things that shouldn't. That's also where you'll go to initiate your final complaint after delivery.
