Relevant Information:

car - 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

prior service - replaced right drum, front pads and rear pads on 8/99 costing under $300.

Events:

A $99 advertisement on the radio and TV caught my attention so I went to Just Brakes to have my car serviced on 8/11/00. I was the first person there for service. I signed their estimate request form and requested a written estimate. I was told my car needed serious repairs. The estimate was $458.25 for parts and labor on disc pads, brakes shoes, rotor, drum, wheel cylinders, disc hardware, return springs, and a bleed, flush, fill and adjustment of the brake system. I asked if they could just do the "$99 job". They said they could not because the car was in such bad condition that they could be held legally responsible if I were in an accident. With my only options being to pay $99.88 for the estimate without service or pay $458.25 for the complete service, I agreed to the full service. I had already been there several hours and didn't want to spend $100 for nothing in return. The service representative tried to assure that this was a smart choice and that I wouldn't have to worry about brakes for the life of the car because they have a 50,000 mile warranty.

I had to wait over 6 hours for my car to be returned! By looking at the "time in" section on my bill I observed that they started working on my car at 5pm even though I was there since that morning. My entire day was ruined! There were several customers in the office and all were extremely upset at their situation. No one paid just $99.88 and I doubt if anyone has ever been able to do so. Also, although I requested the return of replaced parts in writing, these were not given to me.

I put that day aside. After that, I heard many horror stories about them. I called today to have my brakes checked under warranty and was told that I would have to pay a prorated amount but they couldn't tell me how much until I brought it in. I am going in on Monday, October 1, 2001 and pray my experience is not as distasteful.

Summary:

Walking in I planned on spending a few hours at Just Brakes but spent the entire day there. Although their ad was for $99, I paid almost $500. I do not recommend this company to anyone!

#2Consumer Suggestion

Yep, My friend (who I gave a ride up to Just Brakes) signed the $99.88 "contract" as Tom Coward wrote about...there is your car up on five car jacks (the fifth one being the employees) Your brakes being apart , spread out with them laiyng out a bundle of stories to scare you into getting the work done. The suggested amount of work was over $900.00 (AND nothing was leaking too) This reminded me of a place years ago (1983) that got my car up on a lift and refused to take it down unless I had the 400 plus work done...until my knoeledgable brother in-law came down to the shop raised hell with them and we took the car home and did it ourselves for about $30 in part and a few hours. At least Just Brakes allowed my friend to get his own rotors from a near by auto parts shop reducing the bill... they wanted 169.00 per rotor...we got them for $58.00 each (it is true though that the auto shop had the top of the line rotors for a whole $82.00) I wish we would have seen this site before going there today... I almost warned him on the way up to go somewhere else...I KNEW he would not get out at the $99 dollar special... ...I especially liked the careless way the cars are part up up four jack (all four wheels off at once) ...this seems to be very dangerous and careless for a professional business

j.j. What you should say about "inspecting the balance of the brake system for any other problems" being part of the $99.88 friction reline is...Come on in sign a contract for an advertised service ($99.88) so we can take your vehicle apart, and scare, con,or deceive you into buying our entire store....You do it...Thank God I am not doing it anymore. Consumers are well advised to stay away from Just Brakes

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, IT IS COMMON PRACTICE TO SUGGEST ITEMS THAT A CUSTOMER IS NOT AWARE NEED REPLACING. SUGGESTIVE IS THAT, IT IS NOT REQUIRED BUT RECOMMENDED BASED ON THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MECHANIC OF MANUFACTURER. ARE WE MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE THAT THE COMPANY THAT MAKES THE VEHICLE. I SAY NO. SO EVERYONE GET A GRIP, FIRESTONE, GOODYEAR, SEARS, MIDAS, THE DEALERSHIP ALL SUGGEST ITEMS AS PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE. THE MOTOR ASSURANCE PROGRAM OUTLINE THE WAY A COMPANY CAN OFFER PARTICULAR SERVICES.

to the present employee that is still working for just brakes that hates to wake up every morning and come to work why are you still doing this. i have worked for the company for 2 1/2 years and helped get the atlanta market started. left for 1 year and now i have returned. every customer gets the 99.88 friction reline. and this includes replacing the disc pads and brakes shoes maching rotors and drums packing bearings adjusting and bleeding the brake system and INSPECTING THE BALANCE OF THE BREAK SYSTEM FOR ANY OTHER PROBLEMS. no one every complains that a dealer is charging you $500 for the same work that some one else would charge you $300 to do. wagner bendix raybestos all suggest to replace hardware front or rear at any brake service why can't we? brake system should be bleed every 12 month's is that being done be the owner? if not there is your problem begining. please respond

I totally agree with both of those who work/have worked at Just Brakes (by the way, ex-employee never said he worked in FL). What these guys are saying is common procedure for this company (trying to rack up more repair $$) is exactly what happened to me. What should have been a simple repair turned into a several hundred dollar repair by the time they were done looking at my brakes. I told them to shove it and took my car elsewhere. It turned out my car only needed minor repairs and those parts which Just Brakes said needed replacing weren't even worn down, much less broken!

I AM AN EX EMPLOYEE OF JUST BRAKES,I WAS WITH THE COMPANY IN THEIR EARLY YEARS. I WAS EMPLOYED FROM AROUND 1985 TO LATE 1993. THEY WERE A RIP OFF COMPANY THEN AND BY THE LOOKS OF THESE REPORTS THEY HAVE NOT CHANGED EXCEPT THEY HAVE ALMOST QUADRUPLED THEIR PRICES. BACK WHEN I WAS THERE THE SPECIAL WAS $28.88 IN MOST CASES WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN $28.88 ON RARE OCCASIONS. I DO NOT RECALL BUT SEEING A HANDFULL OF TICKETS IN ALL THE YEARS I WAS THERE THAT WAS UNDER $100.00. THE ONLY TIME I FEEL THAT THE COMPANY WAS ON THE RIGHT PATH WAS WHEN A LADY PURCHASED THE COMPANY AND TRIED VERY HARD TO CHANGE THE IMAGE, BUT WITH TOO MANY OF THE OLD CHARGES STILL THERE SHE FAILED AND THE NEW OWNER WHO TOOK OVER WENT RIGHT BACK TO THE SAME OLD RIP OFF PRECEDURES. I BELIEVE HE IS STILL THE OWNER TODAY. I LEFT THE COMPANY RIGHT AFTER THE PRESENT OWNER TOOK OVER BECAUSE MY CONCIENCE WOULD NO LONGER STAND IT.

I am leaving my name silent do to the fact that I am currently an employee at one of the Just Brakes locations in the Tampa area. I have been with the company for several years. I can assure you that " in most cases" you won't get your brakes done for just $99.88. It really is a real big rip off. For the past few years that I have been with the company, I can honestly say that only a small percentage of people get the $99.88. It is very rare. Everyday, I hate waking up and going to work with the fact of knowing what kind of company that I work for. It is a very dishonest and money hungry company. Money is all that they care about. Just Brakes does not care for its customers or its employees. I have even personally questioned my boss as to why we advertise the $99.88 deal when it is so rarely done for customers. he answered back by stating that it is how the company beats the competition by getting people in the doors. The company has every intention of doing its best to get as much money as they can from each customer that drives through that door. I in the past have inspected vehicles before and told the customers what was wrong with their car. I am a very honest person. I don't like to rip people off. It is usually after I do my vehicle inspections that I get yeld at by my boss, asking why I didnt suggest other parts to be replaced. I always tell him that it is because those certain parts didn't need to be replaced. He always comes back stating that it doesnt matter or not if they are broke, they need to be suggested anyways to try to make more money for the company. I am stating first hand that this company sucks. A good majority of its employees like myself, hate working there. The policies and procedures are a load of crap. I personally, as well as majority of the companies employees would not recommend people to go to Just Brakes for repairs. You will get scammed. I can assure it. By being honest though, I do have to state the fact that if a customers vehicle comes into the shop with a leaky hydrolic part. It is very suggested to be replaced. It is a very big safety issue for yourself and for the safety of other drivers on the road. When I say hydrolic parts, I mean: Calipers, Wheel Cylinders, Hoses, and Master Cylinder. Other than that, whatever you hear usually is a big fat lie. I will continue to check this report from time to time, and if anybody has any further questions and needing more specific answers, I would be glad to answer them. just state a question on this report and i will gladly respond. -thankyou, a concerned Just Brakes employee
