I agree with all the other complaints about Kaplan University. I am dealing with all of the same issues. I graduated with my second degree from Kaplan in May, 2011 (I had no problems when I got my Associates).

Financial aid was doing well up until my last 4 or 5 courses, when all of a sudden I had a balance. When I first noticed the balance, I immediately called the financial aid department. I must have spoken with 3 different people and none of them gave me an answer. I was told that they would look into it and get back to me. After a couple courses went by, my balance was around $5,000 and still no answer.

As many people have stated, they had issues with having an academic advisor. I too, had issues with this. The first advisor I had, during my second degree was fantastic. I'm not sure what happened with him, but I was never assigned anyone else.

When I finally did speak with someone, (after going through 3 or 4 people) I got a BS answer about my "limit on financial aid was up". I'm not complaining about not being eligible for X amount of financial aid, if I had known ahead of time I could have gotten loans through other places. It took so long to get a straight answer out of someone that my balance was $10,000!

The last call I made, before graduation I was given the run-around again, spoke with 5 different people with no settlement to the issue. On top of this I was given a promissory note that says I had a monthly payment of $4,416. I was told, if I did not sign it I would be blocked from classes. I believe I still have the email that says so.

I am currently $10,635.61 in debt to Kaplan University. Maybe I screwed myself by not knowing anything about financial aid and believing the financial aid department told me. Assuming they were there to help me with things I didn't understand.

Now that I have this debt, they call me 5 or 6 times a day, even on weekends. After I have told them time and time again that I do not have $10k to pay them. I was even offered a "discounted balance" of $7, 000+ if I paid the balance in full. I do okay for myself, but I don't have $7k laying around to pay a full balance.
