I own a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 4 dr truck with 10,000 miles on it. On Nov. 29th I drove my pickup approximately 35 minutes with my heater on. I noticed a smell, but I thought it was probably because I hadn't used my heater much. I returned home locked my truck up, when I returned back to it about 3 hours later, I realized it had been on fire. Their was an umbrella in the passenger floor board, the Asst.

Service Manager @Keith Pierson Toyota Mr. Jim Crane, told me I had the umbrella shoved up in the heater vent, and that this had caused the fire. I have pictures that I took before taking my vehicle to Keith Pierson for repairs. The umbrella was in the floor board area, but it was not shoved up in the vent. I feel that the heater got too hot, which caused the fire, an I feel it should have been covered under my vehicle warranty.

This man was very rude, as he acted as if I had done this intentionally. I am very upset about this fire, I am scared to take this vehicle back after they finish repairing it. I was also told by my Vehicle Insurance Co., Mercury Ins., that of the $6800, damage, $2200 of that was for repair of the wiring harness. Some of which had melted. If I do not get satisfaction from Toyota Headquarters, I will persue a law suit against this company. I want them to take responsibility for this as I am not the only person to keep the umbrella in the floor board area of their vehicle.

Janice, can you provide more details about the source of the fire? What part of the vehicle burned specifically....what area beneath the hood? I note that in most cases of engine fires, vehicle owners go through their own insurance companies, regardless of cause of fire. I wonder how many Toyota vehicles have spontaneously caught fire? It would be interesting to catalog this data, especially as it relates to mysterious low mileage engine failures occurring in late model Toyotas. File a complaint with the NHTSA as soon as you can. Did you have any problems or note anything about your engine performance prior to the fire? Is there any way to get an engine oil sample for analysis? I think engine fires need to be examined through the insurance companies. This data gets hidden away from the public by and large. What are the stats on engine fires in particular makes and models? Are Toyotas any more or any less likely to catch on fire based on these stats? I'd like to know especially as more and more owners are experiencing engine failures with or without engine oil sludge. Some owners with these failures have noted a spontaneous engine fire at the time of failure. What is the connection? There must be an explanation for your engine fire. It would be pretty scary to think that an umbrella in a vehicle could cause a severe fire. This just doesn't make sense. Please do update us on your case.

Try this number for Toyota Corporate

#3Consumer Suggestion

Janice, Although it has been a year since our HORRIFIC experience with KEITH PIERSON TOYOTA I am still angry and am glad to hear that others are speaking out. I filed a complaint with Toyota corporate to no avail, however I made quite a stink and made it very uncomfortable for the IDIOTS at Keith Pierson Toyota. I have just given this number to a friend in California that has a problem with idle surging in his 2002 Tacoma truck, he also has been denied warranty coverage. The zone representatives response was "well it is the nature of the beast" WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN? Another form of toyo reasoning that I heard endlessly a year ago........ Once again SHAME ON YOU TOYOTA ! I will never buy another one of your vehicles again, even though I currently have three in my driveway. Hopefully with this number you will be able to make Keith Pierson and his rippoff artists squirm some more. This number is not an 800 number where you will get the run around. It is a direct number to Bruce Ertmann at Toyota coporate. GOOD LUCK! (310)468-4000.
