The Independent Aug 15, 2017 Updated Aug 18, 2017 13 Malamute tied to tree An adult Alaskan Malamute, tied to a nearby tree, sniffs through assorted items left on the former property of Kelly’s Giant Alaskan Malamutes in Snowflake. Photo courtesy of Eric Grenda bones of malamute Buy Now The bones of a malamute named Talula lay uncovered only feet from a trailer where breeders Sarah Kelly and Kirk Kelly lived in Snowflake, AZ. Over the past few years, complaints and documentation of fatally ill dogs by customers have been attached to the Kelly’s business. Courtesy of the Facebook of Kirk Kelly SNOWFLAKE — A few feet behind an old trailer, a shallow grave yields the bones of an Alaskan Malamute dog — no more than 3 years old, judging by the clean, white teeth. The grave sits on the former property of Kelly’s Giant Alaskan Malamutes, a dog-breeding operation allegedly run by Sarah and Kirk Kelly. For the remaining dogs on the

property, some of which are tied to trees, bones — some of which still have the fur of their former companion attached to it — are left to become an item of entertainment and play for the surviving canines. In the flat, high desert that is Snowflake, there is a growing feud between the Kellys, their former associates and their customers. But to those close to the Malamute breeders, the only casualties are the dogs. As the Kellys move their dogs from location to location, a paper trail of photos, court documents, USDA complaints and alleged falsified veterinary records reveal a long history of questionable breeding practices, a topic about which the Kellys have repeatedly

refused to comment to The Independent. The dozens of breeders, neighbors and online advocates concerned with the treatment of the dogs all ask, “Why hasn’t the local government and animal control taken action?” ‘A Step into Dog Hell’ Introduced by a rough, dirt road, the multi-acre property of Stacy Day, the former partner of Malamute breeders Sarah and Kirk Kelly, is scattered with deep outlines of small dog cages, broken furniture, and the unmistakable stench of years of urine and fecal matter soaked into the dirt — all of which Day said seem to be the product of the Kellys. Now operating on a new property only a few blocks away, Day said the Kellys shared this

property with her for almost two years before their falling out. According to dozens of documents and photos obtained by The Independent, it was the site of numerous cases of sickness, death and questionable living conditions. The 30-plus dogs on the property lived outside in wire fence pens, wrapped around the half-dead trees that are, supposedly, intended to provide shade. Despite having “adequate water” in the eyes of Navajo County Animal Control, the buckets sat dirty and rarely unchanged, according to Eric Grenda, a former veterinary technician and a nephew of Day. Animal control has visited the property several times and allegedly performs daily drive-by’s,

according to Navajo County Health Director Jeff Lee. “When animal control comes up here, the employee I’ve dealt with only does the bare minimum,” Grenda said. “He just looks to see that they have water and at least some shade. He would say it’s because of the laws up here and that there’s nothing to really call animal abuse. I’ve seen things not as bad as this get handled in ways that this should be handled — and it’s not.” Grenda, who was asked to help uphold basic veterinary checkups and medical fixes on the property, quickly figured out that things were much worse than he originally thought. “The conditions up here were just deplorable. Kennels were held together with wiring,

they were rusted, they would break all the time and dogs would get out. They would fight with each other through the fences, stuff like that,” Grenda said. In a video taken by Grenda, a large, thick wooden shed shows it to be the home of a female Malamute and her newborn puppies after their birth. With only two square windows in the front, the wooden shed can turn into a sauna in the Arizona heat. As for the breeding methods, accounts alleged by other breeders who have bought from the Kellys, civilian clients and the Days reveal things worse than just poor conditions; they go against some of the industry’s rules and values. According to Tanya Espinosa, a spokesperson for

the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), “any person that has more than five female dogs and/or sells sight-unseen (over the internet) is required to have a USDA license.” Despite owning more than dozens of adult dogs, the Kellys are firm in their beliefs that they don’t need to be registered with the USDA, according to text messages obtained by The Independent. “Dogs have four heat cycles and the AKC says you can only breed on two of those. She was doing all four cycles on these dogs. On one sick dog they had, [vets] did an exploratory surgery to figure out what was wrong and her insides weren’t even in the right place. They were just completely bruised and

calloused and her uterus was falling out due to over-breeding,” Grenda said. Grenda said he repeatedly raised concerns about potential breeding violations, but Sarah Kelly allegedly dismissed his complaints. “These allegedly licensed dogs are going to have hereditary issues forever [like] hip dysplasia, intestinal issues, etc. They’re just going to be prone to things that are awful in big breed dogs,” he said “I would see things and come to her and tell her that these issues are beyond anything or anyone on this property could help with. These issues could only be handled in a sterile setting.” In their eventual falling out in May, a restraining order was filed by both parties,

escalating the tension and aggression by the Kellys toward the Days. Since being kicked off the property by Stacy Day, the couple has been arrested for violation of the restraining order and had involvements with the police many times in an effort to “get their dogs back and take what’s theirs,” according to the Kellys Facebook posts and police reports. For the Kellys, there have been previous issues. Incidents and investigations After years of complaints and conflict, individuals once close to Kelly’s Giant Alaskan Malamutes have reportedly severed their ties. The Kellys’ dog groomer, Terri Franklin, announced her decision to cut ties with the business on Facebook due to the alleged condition

of the dogs. “I have personally had to shave five of their dogs to the skin due to severe mats and hot spots, along with gashes on the skin from Sarah trying to cut out the mats and catching chunks of dog’s skin,” Franklin said. “I thought I was helping them because they had just moved here and were trying to get their kennel back up and running. I soon learned the truth and cut my ties.” Sarah Kelly allegedly bought small white “Toy Breed” dogs to raise and breed on the property in Snowflake, according to Day. After a week in their care, Day said one had died due to a cut across the neck with scissors during an attempt at grooming. “She had reached out to me to see if I had

instructions or a video on how to shave the dog, which surprised me coming from a supposedly experienced breeder,” said Karen H., the breeder who sold the dogs and who wished to not have her full last name revealed due to personal concerns. “She sent me a photo of a matted, dirty ball of hair and it was actually the dog.” Stacy Day said she walked into the kitchen while Sarah Kelly was attempting to groom the small dog. Astonished, she asked what Kelly was trying to do. “It was right as I said that when she clipped the back of the dog’s neck and it started bleeding everywhere,” Day said. “She told me to run and get super glue to close the hole and pinched it shut. It died

two days later. I truly believe it died from infection.” After that, Day said she filed for a restraining order against the Kellys, kicking them off the property. Currently, Kelly’s Giant Alaskan Malamutes sits on a flat piece of land only a few blocks from the old property and the couple operates it like a fortress. In numerous statements responding to complaints from buyers on Ripoff.com, the Kellys encourage anyone to visit their property and visit with the dogs themselves. What prospective buyers are usually met with, though, is aggressive behavior and vulgar threats anytime someone gets too close to the property, Grenda said. “I just saw her new property about four days ago and

driving by, it looks like ‘Mad Max’ out there,” Grenda said, referring to the feature-length motion pictures bearing the same name that depicts a post-apocalyptic landscape. “The kennels are coming undone, top falling over. Adequate shade is technically not a requirement here, but what she’s doing is putting up sun-screening for a house window above the cage. That’s ripping off and flapping in the wind, so the dogs are cooking in there from noon until later that night.” http://www.wmicentral.com/news_premium/special-report-feud-among-breeders-turns-into-fight-for-dogs/article_6925f77d-152e-54d1-88ac-7e4a3be0364e.html The truth about Kelly's /Snowflake Airizona Puppy Mill

This is being posted to correct the lies and slander from Jordan Glenn of the White Mountain Independent. I find it hard to believe that Mr. Glenn still calls himself a journalist after posting misinformation due to lack of research. First, I will give a brief introduction of myself. I have been raising Alaskan Malamutes for 9 years, and involved with the breed for 13 years. I have an amazing girl from Sarah Kelly. She just turned 7, and there has never been an issue with her. She arrived healthy, happy, and has remained so. Additionally, Sarah has always been there if I have had a question, etc. I am going to pick this article apart, and have proof of all statements I make. This article opens with the statement that the photos provided were proof of the poor care the Kelly’s provided their dogs. A few minutes of research will tell you that all of these photos were posted AFTER Stacy Day and Sarah Kelly had a falling out, which resulted in Stacy Day getting a restraining order.

This restraining order denied the Kelly’s the ability to care for their dogs while waiting for a court ruling. It is ONLY during this time, that these horrible photos turned up. As for the dog tied to a tree, that was NOT one of Sarah’s dogs. That dog belonged to the property owners and was tied to the tree so Erick Grenda could take the photo to use as fuel for the slander campaign. Let’s talk about the bones now. After talking with Sarah, one of the graves dug up was that of an elderly dog that passed away. Now, let’s use some very simple logic for a second. If a dog has been buried so long that most of the fur has fallen to decay, as the uncovered bone looks like it’s been in the ground of the high desert, how could the teeth be whiter than most well cared for living dogs?? Clearly photoshopped for shock value. But all that aside, let’s consider an even more important fact….what level of heartlessness does someone need to reach to desecrate a GRAVE to make a point?! Had they all the proof they need, they would have no need to desecrate multiple graves in attempt to fuel the fire. Shade and water….I live in a high desert location as well. Without any form of shade and fresh water, a malamute simply cannot survive. It would be physically impossible for the dogs to survive for two years in those conditions. Yet, they did survive.

The worst time for them was after the Kelly’s were forced to leave as Stacy Day and family destroyed the kennels to take the terrible photos they wanted. The same applies to the females supposedly kept in sheds that turned into saunas. Without proper ventilation and airflow, the females and their puppies would not have survived, but again, they did! Simple logic shows that Mr. Grenda is nothing but a liar. To quote Mr. Glenn: "Dogs have four heat cycles and the AKC says you can only breed on two of them. She [Sarah] was doing all four cycles on these dogs.” – PLEASE show me where this is stated anywhere on the AKC’s website! Large breed dogs have an average of two heat cycles per year. Most choose to skip a heat, breeding only once per year. Several breeders that I know have chosen to breed every heat cycle. These litters born on every cycle are AKC registered.

For registration, the AKC requires that females fall into the age range of seven months to twelve years of age, and the correct parents must be listed on the papers (no forged papers). NO WHERE do they state that a female cannot be bred on each heat. Another research fail for Mr. Glenn! Mr. Glenn goes on to discuss what Mr. Grenda described to be a prolapsed uterus. Just a quick lesson, a prolapse is when some or all of the vaginal tissue swells and protrudes out of the vulva. Prolapses are graded as mild (just a small amount of tissue protruding), moderate (most or all of the vaginal tissue protruding), and severe (all vaginal tissue, uterus, etc all protruding). A severe prolapse is fatal, and does NOT requite exploritory surgery to diagnose.

Furthermore, a prolapse is caused by a hormone imbalance. It is not directly linked to overbreeding. In fact, prolapses are more common in younger females that have never been bred. This condition is NOT hereditary, so the claim that this will cause intestinal problems in the offspring is laughable. – more research failing! Another interesting fact, Stacy Day and family claim that these conditions have been unchanged for 2 years, why did they not speak up before? Why only launch this bashing campaign AFTER Stacy Day failed to get what she wanted from Sarah (continued financial support) Here are some other's involved: Loretta Lynn Roach is one of the leaders in this hate campaign. She purchased a puppy from Sarah Kelly. She publicly posted on face book when her puppy arrived, stating how happy she was with her healthy new baby. After the falling out between Sarah Kelly and Stacy Day, Loretta jumped on the hate wagon, "terrified” for the puppy she placed in Sarah’s care. Yet, when asked, she was making no attempts to get her puppy back. What kind of breeder would let a puppy go to these alleged conditions, and past that, make NO attempt to ensure the safety of their puppy?? Karen Hansen is another who jumped in after Sarah refused to trade more dogs to her. Karen traded several Maltese to Sarah in payment for Alaskan Malamutes. She failed to provide the agreed papers on the Maltese. Furthermore, she forged contracts regarding the Alaskan Malamutes to get their papers from the AKC.

Karen is known to have puppies delivered to her earlier than 8 weeks of age (which is illegal). She also breeds lines with KNOWN hereditary defects such as overbite. Several of her females have had litters on their first heat. Some of these girls are STOLEN, which is why she refuses to provide photos of the parents. She also lies about their lines to promote her sells. Anyone finding her to be credible is full of it themselves. Michelle, who claims her puppy arrived with parvo is lying. Upon arrival, her puppy was healthy enough that her veterinarian administered vaccines. She also refused to provide test results backing her claim. Marcy Legends has been speaking out against Sarah since this falling out, but they've had personal issues. Though it has been removed from her website, email Marcy and ask for training advice to prevent fighting. She recommends a good whack with a belt! Karen and Stacy are both lying about the transport company claims. Sarah helped start the transport company in hopes of helping Stacy get back on her feet financially. Karen claims that a white van delivered her puppies. The MalamuteXpress vehicle was in fact, an old truck with a camper. I saw it for myself when my puppy was delivered to me. Thankfully, my puppy arrived safely, but Stacy would have nothing to do with me. Sarah kept me updated throughout the trip, she talked with me for a bit when they arrived, and saw her pup that I mentioned in the intro. Never once did I hear from Stacy during the transport. Now that the vehicle has been corrected, let’s discuss the puppy that was lost during transport. Sarah and Stacy stopped for lunch in Salt Lake City, UT for lunch. Stacy’s son met up with them at this location. In a huge coincidence, the puppy was there before they met up with Stacy’s son, and missing after. There was no open hatch for a puppy to fall through. I know this because I saw the vehicle myself. Stacy NEVER even contacted the breeder of this pup. The money for the transport was paid directly to Stacy, yet it is Sarah who refunded this breeder from her personal funds, and replaced the pup with one of her own. Sarah had no obligation to do anything, but made every attempt to fix things with the pups breeder as Stacy made no attempt to do anything - I heard this directly from the breeder of the pup, not Sarah.

Several people have tried to claim that sick puppies were shipped via the airlines. Call any/all airlines you want, they will all say the same. Even with a certificate from a veterinarian, they airlines inspect each animal, and have full authority to turn away any animal that is not in good health. I know this from personal experience in having a rescue shipped to me. The question posed is a very good one: Why hasn’t the local government, animal control, animal advocacy group, USDA, etc, taken any action? Could it be that there is no action to take? When a family of vengeful people go out of their way to put dogs in harms way to destroy a breeder that tried to help them, there is no paper trail to follow, so no action can be taken. YES, the photos posted were terrible! But these photos were set up. Stacy and her family destroyed the kennels, tied the dogs to trees, dug up graves, all because they didn’t get what they wanted. They are not the victims. Sarah and Kirk Kelly are the real victims here. Look up Karen Hansen. She has many more rip off reports filed against her for sick animals.

Though this wasn’t in the article, there are claims that a puppy buyer visited the Kelly’s in Arizona, and left crying. This is true. I have seen the messages from the buyer. It has been suggested that she could not handle the conditions, and the poor conditions is what made her leave crying. This is FALSE. By her own words, she left crying because the sister of her baby that had passed away was there, and looked identical to her baby. This brought back a lot of memories of her baby, and is what made her leave in tears. Please see the attached photos. The vet paper is what was sent for the puppy who allegedly had parvo. Notice how she only sent the testing done, and none of the results? The article is about Karen Hansen’s criminal husband The letter is from the Kelly's veterinarian in Arizona A message from another breeder scammed by Karen Hansen And finally, a mugshot of Eric Grenda, the main source of information for this bogus article. ripoffreport.com/reports/giantmalamutescom-karen-hansen/dolores-colorado/giantmalamutescom-karen-hansen-puppy-mill-transfers-and-receives-puppies-under-8-weeks-1422907 https://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/rocky-mountain-biewer-terriers/dolores-colorado-81323/rocky-mountain-biewer-terriers-karen-hansen-and-jared-hansen-they-sent-me-a-sick-puppy-do-1433434
