I joined the new LA Fitness in McDonough to continue physical therapy for a hernaited disk. My orthopaedic surgeon wrote a prescription for me to do this. I signed up with a club agent and paid the full membership fee plus the first month's dues by check. All information was entered correctly in the computer, including my payment. The club's computers were overloaded the day I signid up--4 January 2008--so my check did not process. The agent marked the check VOID, and we agreed to allow a 4-7 day wait to process the check.

I was at the club on 10 January 2008, 4 days after this, and my agent was not working that day. I wanted the transaction to be completed, and another agent happened to hear my conversation with the front desk attendant. He said he could complete the membership for me and would advise the original agent that he had done so. I was adamant in questioning him several times if this would be OK since all my information was already in the computer. He assured me it would not matter. So,he signed me up and had me write a new check.

I was again at the club on Friday, 11 January 2008, and my first agent was there. He had gone ahead and processed my first check without my being there, which was totally unacceptable from my point of view. I explained what had transpired the previous day, and you can be sure there was a note of great annoyance and panic in my voice. He spoke with agent #2, who put a cancellation on the second membership.

On Monday, 14 January 2008, I was horrified to see that 2 membership checks for $168.98 had processed through my checking account. I spoke with the LA Fitness general manager in person and was told that although the membership had indeed cancelled, the check had processed anyway. He assured me a refund would be issued as a credit to my checking account within 3-5 days.

Today is 2 February 2008, and I still do not have the refund. I am a retired teacher and live on a modest pension. Losing this money has created a financial hardship and placed me under a great deal of stress. I have spoken in person with the general manager of this club, the area vice president, and an assistant manager concerning my refund with the only results being a lot of promises and no action. Now when I call about this issue, no one will return my calls. I am cancelling my membership with LA Fitness. I advise anyone considering a membership with this club to think again. Let the buyer beware!!
