I also received letter from Maple Trust and Finance advising that they represented consumer promotion draw and proclaiming that I have won $250000. The enclosed check does look real. I called Lisa Brown, who is listed as claims agent and was advised to deposit check and call her back. I have not deposited this check as yet. I am waiting to check it out first.

Large winning checks for sweepstakes that you know you didn't enter (because it doesn't exist) do not magically show up in your mailbox. This is a very common scam. Scammers rely on the greed of their victims (i.e. getting something for nothing) to override their common sense.
The check is fake. Do not deposit it in your bank account. The rest of the scam involves you sending an untraceable Moneygram or Western Union wire to someone you don't know. You will not find out the check is bogus until after you've sent your cash. Even if you don't send the money, your bank could still close your account for attempting to pass a bogus check. Just shred the check and move on.
