Mary Scam Selling of false advertising Hamilton, New Jersey
Mary approached our new restaurant and offered to mail advertising booklets to 10,000 homes and 10,000 businesses in the area. She would charge a discounted price for the month of September, and when we resisted, she said she would give us October, November and December free. She also offered us the front page of the booklet for one of the months.
We paid her a deposit and later she came back for the balance, saying she would bring
a copy of the booklet with her. We paid her the balance, and she showed us an old copy as the new copies suffered a delay in printing. As October rolled around, it became evident that the copies were not mailed. Several people in the area and several businesses in the area reported non-receipt personally to me. On the phone,she insisted that all copies had been mailed and the people I spoke to had evidently for some reason not received their copies. I called her several time always getting an answering machine,but to her credit,she did call back after each message. Her response was always that something or other
had gone wrong, but the mailings had gone out. I finally called her and reminded her that fooling with the U. S. Postal Service is a federal offense and she could have the FBI wanting to talk to her. Also since she collected N.J. sales tax on the sale and I assumed she didn't pay it to the state, then the New Jersey government would like to talk to her. These would be in addition to the the police of the two local municipalities we straddle. Also I threw in the local county Sherrif's department. She then said she would return my money in about a week, because her accountant was very busy. I said I wanted it the next day and when I came into work the next
day, there was a check waiting for me. I went directly to her bank and cashed the check.
