Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

My husband received a "final notice" from the Maryland Central Collections unit. Apparently, we have a bill of more than $2k. At first, he thought it was a scam. Then I looked it up and realized it was a real place.

Here's the problem. Maryland has a record of us re-registering the car in IL in 2003-- this is just a couple of months after they say we didn't have insurance. But since 2003, CEntral Collections has made exactly two attempts to contact us--late 2003 and late 2004. Both attempts came back return to sender. They never made any additional attempt because, apparently, it wasn't possible for them to search by ss# until a month ago or something (2013/2014).

If we can show proof of insurance, the fine will be waived BUT this happened more than 10 years ago! None of our banks from them have records any longer. No insurance company seems to have any records that go back that far.

This Central Collections made NO EFFORT (their words) to contact us for a decade--not until it's far too late for us to find any actual proof.

The IRS doesn't even require records for more than 7 years!

This is a total scam. Like I'm supposed to believe that the State of Maryland had no way to search for our SS# before a month ago. No way? REally? They're a collection agency! Their job is to find people, and the *conveniently* waited until it would be nearly impossible for us to provide any sort of proof before they actually told us about the bill.
