My company hired Michael Modena to build a website for us back in February.. We are a company offering web sites to musicians, and this was our first client. The site was near completion, and he asked for $150 US more to add a store to the site. He is always very quick to send a paypal money request, which we paid promptly, thinking nothing of it.

We then sent him $175 US as a 50% down payment for our own company website. As we put our clients first, we didnt say much when no work was completed on this site for over 3 weeks.

We got a 2nd client, which we paid him $250 US for a 50% down payment on as well to build their site.

The first site was uploaded to the client's hosting, and that's when Michael slowly dropped out of contact with us.

He never supplied us with the original flash files for the site or information on how to update it, as promised.

After 4 weeks of no work being seen on our personal site, we asked what was going on. He told us he was having problems with his main source of income, another web design company called Simple Season. But he assured me that as of the next day, I would have him all to myself, implying he was quitting that job.

That was the last time I heard from him. We have emailed him repeatedly about our sites with no reply. We lost a LOT of money to him, and because we had 2 clients involved as well, we were left hanging having to explain why their sites could not be updated and would be a few more weeks to be finished. We hired new designers to fix all the problems, figure out how to udpate the existing site, and finish off the jobs he left undone. All that money was out of OUR pocket.

Michael Modena made off with $585 US of our money, and after extensive research by our lawyer we have found we are certainly not the first people he has ripped off. His father is Jack Modena, of the company Modena & Son Moving in CT, also goes by the name of Rent Arms & Legs Moving. This kid is in his early twenties, by the way.

Mike has paypal accounts under the following emails:

[email protected]

We have disputed our payments to him with Paypal, escalated the claims, and they have sided with us. However, they were unable to recover the funds.

We now plan to take legal action against him, and will not drop this until Mike Modena pays us back in full.

I hope that we can help people to not be ripped off by this young scam artist by posting our experience here. We would be happy to speak with anyone who has also been scammed, if you are a lawyer, or would like to build a class action suit. Email us at (((redacted)))

Last wednesday, Mike told us he'd send us a refund cheque via overnight mail. Must have been another lie.. as no such cheque has been received! We've also been contacted by another design firm who he scammed in the exact same way. Looks like this one's going to court.

Well just a quick update to those interested... Aside from this report, I also used a site called Complaints Board, and reported Mike to the FTC and IC3. In addition I emailed his formal employer at Simple Season (in case he was still working for them) and I found the email for his dad, Jack Modena, and emailed him as well. Today, I finally received an email from Michael Modena. First contact since April 24 2009. He got a call from his dad, and read all the reports on him online, and is willing to refund our money. I'll keep you posted on this situation as it unfolds. ;) Alison

Yep like father like son, there is already another rip off report on Jack Modena about his moving moving business ripping some lady off. Zio we are in Canada and have learned our lesson, so we wont be hiring out of town anymore, but wish you the best of luck!

I have noted the names of both the son and father. You know what they say like father like son if the kid is a scam artist then the rest must be also. I am a graphic designer / webdesign and have been looking for clients in ct, I am out of college but returning for my BA degree I would have loved to create the site for you and probably wouldn't have asked for payment until you where happy with the results.
