I also had a problem cancelling my MSN service. Thank GOODNESS I knew enough to write down my cancellation number. I didn't expect to have any problems, and nearly threw this number out.

I had signed up for a 3-month free promotion. However, after only about 2 weeks of using the service, I decided to get a cable modem instead. So I called and cancelled, recording my cancellation number on the back of a piece of scrap paper, almost as an afterthought, and stuck it in a pile of important papers.

When I was filing those papers a few days later, I nearly threw that number out, but decided to keep it, "just in case." Imagine my surprise, when at the end of the three month trial period, plus an additional month, there's a charge on my credit card for MSN. I call their customer service number, and I'm told that there's no record of me cancelling my account, and that they won't refund my money. I give my cancellation number. I'm told that that "doesn't appear to be a valid cancellation number", but I was given a number to call for their cancellation department "to see if my issues could be resolved". The number I was given was 800-221-7779. I was told to choose option #2.

I called that number, chose that option, and was transferred to a representative who was able to pull up my cancellation number. So I will supposedly be credited my money within 30 days. I have that date marked on my calendar. If that money's not in my account, I'm calling again.

Here's my advice:

Write down what date and time you called, and the name of the person you spoke to, and make SURE to write down any reference numbers you are given.

Hope this helps :)
