On 9/30/2016, I was laid off from my job. On 10/31, my health insurance provided by my former employer was set to expire. COBRA did not seem to be an affordable option so, I started researching on-line on 10/20 for a replacement plan. I’ve seen advertisements for www.obamacareplans.com and started looking there. On that sight, I filled out a small questionnaire and almost immediately got a call from an agent explaining all the benefits they provide and the costs. I allowed myself to get talked into signing up with them, and gave them my SSN and debit card number and I was set up with some company called SimpleHealth for a plan that was $49.95 per month with a $75.00 non-refundable enrollment fee totaling $124.95. Then I did some research on them and realized this was a scam. So I called SimpleHealth back and canceled everything. After some arguing with them, they went ahead and canceled it and said I would receive a confirmation email which I never received. What I did receive afterward were dozens of phone calls over the next week from people trying to sell me insurance. One number, 757-204-3366 called my cell phone 29 times over the course of about five days. 13 on Thursday, 10 on Friday, then they gave me the weekend off and started up again on Monday at 9:30am. Called about every hour until 6:30pm. Repeated the same on Tuesday.

At this point, there were no charges on my checking account, until 11/4. One charge came through on my checking account for $124.95. It appears as follows:

11/04/16 DBT Purchase Benefit Transact S877 258 8594 Tx 0925 - $124.95

I called the above number shown on my bank statement 877 258 8594. The pre-recorded greeting answered as ‘Customer service, please hold while the next available agent...’, the greeting did not state who I was calling so when an agent named Dominique picked up, I asked ‘who are you?’ She said National Congress of Employers. I said I never heard of ‘National Congress of Employers’ but I canceled my policy with SimpleHealth weeks ago and should never have been charged and you need to reverse that charge now. She explained that there is some association between the two and that the agent who I talked to earlier never put the cancellation through but she would put it through now and that I should see the charge reversed on my account within 5 to 7 business days. Today is 11/7 so I should get my money back by the 16th. Maybe that’ll be the end of it but I doubt it. So I’m posting this here and other places in hopes that I’ll be able to help others avoid going through the mess that I could have avoided if I’d only done a little research ahead of time.
