On Saturday June 27, 2009 2 kids came knocking on my apartment door selling magazines to help with scholorships or something like that. First off, they are not supposed to be selling in apartments and second I was having one heck of a day dealing with a very cranky 2 year old and 1 month old. I told them I was not interested but they kept asking me questions telling me they got points for each question asked. At one point one of the kids asked if he could come in and use my table so he could write down on his paper that he talked to me and b/c I needed to tend to my kids and didn't have time to deal with it I said that was fine but I wasn't buying anything. He then kept telling me that my neighbor upstairs bought 10 subscriptions and sent them down to me and that I would buy one. I told him I had no money right now and he explained I could write a check and that they would not cash it for 2 weeks. So I looked at the magazines they were offering and said no for the 10th time and he kept pushing, and it was lunch time and I had to feed my 2 year old and I knew the only way to get these kids out of my apartment would be to buy one. I remembered he had said that I could cancel at anytime after I ordered. So I said I would order I 1 magazine. I start to write the check and I reask to make sure that they will not cash it for 2 weeks. He gives me his word. He then tells me I can cancel at anytime and does not say anything else about that. He asked for my address but not my zip or anything, and then he informs me there is a process and handeling fee which is $15 on top of the subscription!! At that point I said I don't want to do this then b/c it was going to cost me a total of $51 and I can't afford to do that. He informs me I will get the $15 back when my check clears. I'm thinking I'm going to cancel anyways so whatever. He has me sign a little receipt thing and as he is leaving I double check once again that they will not cash my check for 2 weeks, he insists they won't. Forward to 4 days later, THEY CASH MY CHECK!! Thanks to this my account was over drawn. So I go back to my receipt to call the company and there is no phone number. Also as I am reading I only had 3 days from the day of the sale to cancel my order and I had to do it by mail and send in a yellow receipt. All I got was a pink one. I was never informed of this!! Also looking at my pink receipt he didn't even put the title of my magazine on the slip, put my whole address on there or even put his name!!! So needless to say I am so out of $51. After talking with the apartment office I am not the only one that got taken advantage of, but it really upsets me that they would do this. They could see I had my hands full that day and I told them that I was not interested numerous times and they kept pushing. But to lie in front of my child! Losing the money hurts too b/c that is money we could have used for diapers or formula. Also them cashing my check early cost me an extra $30 and made me question everything! So beware of OK Marketing, they clearly do not care who is selling products through them.

I have a suggestion on how to stop this from happening again...

#2Consumer Suggestion

Thu, July 02, 2009

You hear a knock on the door. You answer it. It is two teenagers/college kids selling something. You don't let the conversation continue. You say "this complex does not permit solicitation, and I am asking you now to leave. I am not interested". Then you shut the door. Easy-Peasy.
