Petland of Baton Rouge on Siegen Lane still has not paid a dime towards my vet bills or return my money for the $3200 Bulldog I purchased. I would not demand for my money in return if it was not clearly stated in their contract. I followed all procedures in the contract. Went to my vet, then went to their vet to confirm my dog's condition in writing. I have filed a suit against them in small claims court. The owner is an attorney as well so he requested the suit be transferred to civil court where he can appeal the decision of small claims court. Well, I have all the facts that will prove Petland's obligation to refund my money.

Thanks to all that have shown concern for my sick Bulldog. I am still dealing with Petland's owner, Rick Singer whom has not stepped up to his responsibilities and promises of his healthy puppy guarantee. In fact, he avoided phone calls from my attorney for weeks and then he finally decided to answer the phone. Apparently, he is angry that I have reported him to Ripoff Report. He mentioned this to my attorney which I thought was ridicilous. He didn't think he should honor his contract because of the report. So, I suppose he would've returned my money or reimbursed me for the vet bills had I not made the report. Hmmm I don't see this as being fair or justified. Just because I made a report on the bad business you made, you are going to use it as an excuse for not honoring your own contract?! Petland designed their contract to sell their pets so people think they are getting a healthy dog with the guarantee. I was certainly fooled. Neither the corporate office nor the store owner gives a d**n about the animals and if they are actually healthy or not once they get the money in their hands. I am going to take Petland to court. The owner of the store is an attorney but just because he knows how to draw up fancy legal documentation does not mean that you will win. Anyone can see that he is a total RIP-OFF! If it's the fact that I reported him and he is worried about losing business then I would strongly recommend that he honor his contracts to his customers because I will continue to report them to every agency possible to spread the word of what kind of business they conduct. Petland sells over priced animals with fake guarantees! See you in court!

As a former employee of Petland, I certainly know and understand what Theresa went through. I have witnessed a person drop off a stray mixed breed that they found on the street and the owner of the pet store proceeded to sell the dog for $1,000 claiming that it was a purebred. Just about all the animals there have been sick. Not only the dogs but the cats and reptiles also. Now depending on when Theresa bought her bulldog, I distinctly remember one or two English bulldog puppies having to be in isolation because of their illness. Now you also have to think about the conditions in which the dogs lived. I can say that the kennels are cleaned daily every morning before the store being opened but I can admit to seeing a couple of employees not following proper procedure for cleaning the kennels thoroughly. This can certainly be a cause in the health of the dogs. Also what I didn't care for was the fact that "designer breeds" or mixed breeds were being sold for 800 and 900 dollars. I went to the animal shelter and got a rat terrier dachshund mix for $58.I've also seen a woman bring her dog back in because her son wasn't taking care of it. Instead of selling it at a lower cost, the dog was sold for $700. Petland may have the cutest puppies but I suggest only going over there to look and to hold but not to purchase. Theresa, I hope that you are successful with your suit against Petland. I have dealt one on one with the owners and I did not like dealing with them whatsoever. I felt that they were very rude, arrogant, and just plain mean. Good Luck.

this is kinda long guys, sorry... Pet Stores/Shops buy puppies in quantity from puppy brokers. Puppy brokers get their puppies in bulk from puppy mills. Puppy mills produce these puppes in mass quantities and sell them for lower prices to the brokers. It is a vicious cycle. The puppies are raised in filthy conditions and then shipped off as soon as possible. Just because you pay double for something doesn't mean the quality is better. While I hate to use this analagy (because there is a huge difference between a car and a living thing), a pet shop is like going to a side of the road car shop. Inflated prices along with no real guarantee once you drive it off the lot... I was a receptionist at a vet office for several years, and we had a Petland open in the area. Every puppy that came into our clinic from Petland was sick. Yet clients would pay $1500 for a poodle puppy then another $500 in vet bills just to turn around and do it again bybuying another one! People never cease to amaze me.. If you do your research, you can find a healthy and happy pet puppy from a responsible breeder. Many show breeders have pet quality puppies for the same price or less as these pet shops. They get to know the families they place their puppies with and also offer health guarantees, plus they are more knowledgable than a Petland associate about the breed because they care where the puppies go, and many of these people have been breeding/showing dogs for years. Plus, you can actually visit the breeder or at the least get pictures of the parents, health clearances, and references of past clients. Another sign of a responsible breeder is making you aware of genetic conditions that affect the breed, and providing proof of any health clearances that the parents have(ie, OFA/Penn Hip for hips, CERF for eyes, BAER for ears, and in some breeds they can actually do DNA tests to determine if the parents carry a gene for certain conditions). There is a difference between buying from a reputable breeder and a *backyard* breeder. Most backyard breeders adverstise in the paper and think because their puppies have AKC papers, they are something special. The AKC is just a registry for dogs, they even state they make no guarantee of health or quality. Also the Bulldog Club of America can provide you with a listing of breeder referrals. In short, a little research would have gone a long way. Now, I am not saying that you are in the wrong here. I absolutley loathe puppy mills, brokers, and pet shops, because when it comes down to it, they dont care about the dogs they sell. Petland has done you and so many other people wrong, misrepresented where pets come from, etc. Getting an attorney is the way too go, also check and see what kind of laws are in your state regarding the sale of dogs and cats. I know some states have a *lemon* law but I am not sure what the perimeters and specifics are.

Theresa is correct. Demodectic mange is caused by a microscopic mite called Demodex canis. All dogs raised normally by their mothers possess this mite as mites are transferred from mother to pup via cuddling during the first few days of life. Sarcoptic mange, on the other hand, is the more widely known variety to the public. This type of mange is contagious and passed from one animal to another in any stage of life.

Not sure where the link to your suggested site is. However, I will disagree as you should probably check out the 5 minute consult website as it states clearly that certain types of mange such as demodex mange is inherited through the parents of the animal. I am not a vet but I do have in writing from three different vets that state the demodex mange is hereditary. I am sure that if brought in court, there's not much of an argument. Although there is treatment, it does not change the conditions of the contract that Petland offered upon purchase of the dog.

I started to type my response regarding this mange issue, but found this link instead. Please read. It is not genetic or inherited. We treat animals all the time for this at my animal hospital. This website will also help you determine breeding status.
