In 2004, Public Storage converted all accounts, nationwide, from Pay in Arrears to Pay in Advance. In September of 2004, we paid for the conversion by making double payments. We have been trying since then to get our account status changed from Pay in Arrears to Pay in Advance, but Public Storage has failed to do so. Finally, on 1/8/2008, Ms. Anna Attaway, the Public Storage District Manager based in Plano, Texas, changed our account to Pay in Advance. But instead of taking our double payments into account, she simply changed the date our payment was due and added additional rental charges to our account. That in turn resulted in numerous late charges being added to our account.

We obtained our complete account history from the managers of the Jackson Drive location in Garland, Texas, in December of 2007. Those records, along with our bank records, clearly show that our account history is incorrect in Public Storage's system. In fact, those records show "refunds" which we never received. There is clear evidence of employee misconduct.

In October of 2005, we closed one of our storage units but paid Public Storage $156 because they still showed the account as Pay in Arrears. (They have you over a barrel. Once you are inside their electronic gates, you cannot leave without entering a code. They can disable your account so you cannot leave until you pay, so we had no choice but to pay the money. That's extortion.) So now they owe us the $156 plus interest.

It gets better. On 1/8/2008, Ms. Anna Attaway finally changed our account to Pay in Advance. However, instead of taking the double payments we made in 2004 into account, she added a monthly rental charge and various late fees to our account. Now we have received a Notice of Claim.

Public Storage clearly does not care that their records are incorrect. Do not rent from them. They will rip you off every chance they get. I have filed a complaint with the Texas Attorney General, which is probably why the retaliatory charges have appeared on our account.

I am a public storage employee and you did not handle this correctly. You dont just give up when there is an error by employees of public storage. Those employees do not represent the whole company and go the the attorney general. There is a chain of command. You get the issue resolved. Not a ripoff.
