I am so glad I have transaction alerts on my cellular phone for my credit card!I was in the car coming home from work last night and I got about 7 or 8 of these, one after another.

I couldn't check them while driving, so I pulled into a gas station parking lot to see what they were. I hadn't used my card at all and the only transaction I was expecting to clear had already cleared.

I looked at my alerts and they were companies that I'd already seen on the Rip-Off Report: AP*Simplyyou, Ap*Aromatherapyrewards, AP*SavingsClub, UT/Eauctions, Bidfuel, etc.

I wasn't able to address the majority of them last night, plus they were those $1.00 transactions hat you see when you sign up for something online and they pre-auth your card.

I got up this morning and checked my statement online -- there were 2 of these transactions left: UT/Eauction and Bidfuel. I'd seen the reports on the former and how much trouble it takes to get them to drop the charges, so I was apprehensive when I called. Ut/Eauction "associate" was not very helpful at first, but after she put me on hold to "research", she came back and asked me for the account info. She advised me that whoever signed up for it had purchased a kit about becoming a power seller on ebay and the email address they used was "[email protected]". She cancelled the account, agreed that they would not charge my card, and even sent me a cancellation notice to that effect at my email address.

I called Bidfuel next. The Billing Support person was really nice and we went through the same thing, this time she gave me the same email address as the person who started the account and purchased something about becoming profitable on ebay. She cancelled the account and agreed not to charge my card. I also got a notice from Bidfuel that my account was cancelled and my card would not be charged.

Then the same thing happened again -- a bunch of charges beginning with AP9. I tracked them to a company called Adaptive Marketing LLC (1-800-962-4106) and called them. The Billing Specialist and I went through the same verification process, cancelled the account started under my name and sent the cancellation email. She gave me the same email address as the first 2 companies I had called: "[email protected]".

I just filed a complaint about mail fraud, though I don't think it'll do much good. That email address looks like something a spammer would use, but at least I put the word in.

The companies I dealt with are genuine, but there are entities out there who are opening accounts using someone else's information and credit card number and running up charges! They must be stopped!

WATCH OUT FOR CHARGES ON YOUR CREDIT/DEBIT CARD STATEMENT. CHECK YOUR ACCOUNT AT LEAST ONCE A DAY, AND IF YOUR COMPANY OFFERS BALANCE OR TRANSACTION ALERTS, SUBSCRIBE TO THEM. MINE IS FREE AND YOUR BANK SHOULD OFFER THEM FOR FREE OR A SMALL FEE. IF YOU GET ANYTHING FUNNY, CONTACT THE COMPANIES AND MAKE SURE YOU GET THE EMAIL ADDRESS USED AND COMPLAIN TO THE EMAIL ISSUER.
