The type of furnace he has uses the Hot Surface ignitor to act as the flame sensor. A retrofit kit is available to add a remote flame sensor and allow him to keep using his current HSI even if it does not detect flame anymore. Flame detection on any furnace is a process that requires regular cleaning as even the smallest amounts of corrosion will cause a no flame sense even if flame is present. This is why they kept replacing his HSI. It is also made of ceramic and very fragile. Small amoints of dirt and moisture can cause this part to shatter. Every manufacturer uses HSI or Direct Spark ignition. He was told it was a lemon probably because they were trying to sell him more equipment. Consider this information before downgrading our equipment. Thank You
