Take them to small claims court. The filing fee is minimal and you don't need a lawyer. Just make sure you have all pertinent documentation to prove your case.

How much money are you owed by this company? "Under a grand" does not tell us much ... $900? $2? How much exactly? Did you have a signed written agreement detailing the payment amount, terms, etc. prior to doing the work?
