My husband and I are moving to PA (Monroe county area) and we looked at a few apts in Stroudsburg. We were asked to give the owner of a building there $500 cash to hold an apt and I asked for a receipt. They didn't even have a piece of paper to write on... citing they left it at home in NJ. They scribbled on a napkin that they took $500 from us. After speaking to the guy he told me he would require 1 1/2 months security --- but that wasn't in the original ad. He said I could pay it off over a few months. That night (Nov. 24th) I called his son (the person I originally spoke to about renting the apt) I told him I didn't see the 1 1/2 months security in the ad and he told me I was wrong and started screaming at me in Indian. Then he told me "that's it! I will just send you the $500 back and find someone else." I calmed him down and told him I would work out the extra security. My husband did not like how he spoke to me and a few days later my husband called him to tell him we weren't taking the apt. But the guy never called him back. Then it was Thanksgiving and the weekend... Still no word. My husband called him again yesterday and the guy told him he won't give us back our $500. That he would need to "talk to the members of the board" about what to do. He works under a real estate investment firm that's owned by his dad... The one who took our money. The guy texted me tonight telling me they are keeping $425 because they could've rented the apt out by the 1st so now they're at a loss. Days went by after this guy took my money and cursed at me and we decided this is not the right place for us to live. Is that fair of him to keep the $500? I don't think it's right at all.
