So, in March of 2007, I got into a car accident that wasn't my fault. I had pretty bad neck and head trauma and pretty bad back bumper damage to the car. I started to get physical therapy for my neck and back and dealt with the other guys insurance company to fix my car.

Surprisingly, the other guy's insurance company was very nice and helpful and had my car fixed within a month from the accident. Since this was my first accident I had ever had, some people gave me the suggestion of going to a lawyer to settle the claim for the medical part of my case. I was a little hesitant because I had worked so well with the insurance company and thought I could work it out myself, however people kept telling me that the insurance company would stop being polite once I wanted my medical claims covered and would start to give me the run around.

Meantime, my husband had gotten into a minor fender bender and went with Shook and Stone to handle his accident case. Within two months of his accident, his claim was settled. I thought that was pretty impressive, so I went with them. They gave me the bells and whistles of a free consultation and everything.

First off, I didn't even meet with the lawyer that was "supposed" to be handling the case until the last 10 minutes of the meeting. I gave all my information on the case to his paralegal and after an hour of discussing all the details with her, then had to re-tell all the same information to him when he finally decided to pop in but in fast motion because he had another meeting to attend. Second, he seemed so uninterested, like I was wasting his time. But I negotiated his rate down, so I went with them.

The first couple of months I felt pretty good. I got several calls pertaining to my case. After those first two months, nothing. Oh, by the way, Shook and Stone do not have voicemails for any of their people. YOu have to leave a message with an incompotent receptionist. So, I call to find out where my paralegal is and why I haven't heard from her.

She, I find out, has gone to a different department. They don't tell you these things? ARen't you supposed to know who's on your case and if someone else takes over?

Anyway, come July 2008 and I have had now 3 paralegals come and go. What makes it worse is that everytime I get a phone call or email from Shook and Stone about my case they are asking me the same questions that they asked me in my original consultation and they are asking me, ME, to do the research for them. Isn't that why i hired them in the first place? I could've handled the entire case on my own faster and better than them.

It is now Dec. 2008 and I have not heard from either my lawyer or my paralegal since July 2008. I have sent them several emails with "request receipts" on them, to know that they've at least opened my emails. I've also called every week since the August requesting them to contact me back. These, jerks have not once contacted me about the case. Not to tell me what's new, how anything is going, nothing.

PLEASE BE WARNED!! Do not use these guys if you ever want to settle your car accident case before you die. They are rude, disrespectful and do not act in a professional manner. They do not believe in doing what their client wants, keeping their client informed or even talking with their client.

To top it all off, when all is finally said and done, I will have to give these rip-offs 25% of my settlement money for doing absolutely nothing. I did the research for them, I got them my medical information, doctors addresses, pharmacy information, prescription information, etc, etc. I can't fire them because then I have to pay them for the time they supposedly spent on my case for the last year and a half.

I can't go down to their offices because I work about 30 mintues away, they close at 5pm and I get off work at 5pm and they aren't open on the weekends. I would have to take time off work to go down their and jump start them, just to have them ignore me all over again. A victim of an accident should not have to go to these great lengths with the very people who are supposed to righting her wrong.

So, moral is, if you ever get into an accident and will be ever relying on the settlement money from said accident, do no, I REPEAT, do not use Shook and Stone as your lawyers. They will not help you one bit!

Shook and Stone are horrible!

I read a complaint that I agree with 100%. I also read the rebuttal from Leonard Stone. He is one of the owners/lawyers of this Lawfirm. For him to say that the man that left this complaint basically lies floors me! I have experienced this first hand! I have used Shook and Stone for the last time. I regret that I used them again! Never will I use them again but I will not refer them and I will share my experiences with this Lawfirm on every social media site I am on, which are many.

When the person made the complaint, it was as if I was reading exactly what I have and am going though right this moment. They never call you back, and I mean never! The receptionists are rude and short with you. They seem like they hate their job. And the receptionists lie! In terms of communication? I have never in my life dealt with anyone that totally ignores your emails and your calls. For Leonard Stone to basically call this man a liar is sickening. I am now waiting for an award check for the accident I had at work. Last April. I have had my rating already and have signed and accepted the insurance companies offer. I am literally begging for my check that is sitting in their office since yesterday morning at 8am.

The case worker tells me to be patient? They have the check! After 8 hours went by she told me that it’s too late now they are closed. Really! I am in dire need of this money and they don’t give a crap. The check was mailed to Shook and Stone and my case manager told me it had come in. She said she put a rush on it. A rush? Yesterday was 8 hours that my check sat there, and today all together it’s been 30 hours. That’s a rush??? She is not rushing anything. Today is 19 d**n days since I signed and accepted the insurance companies offer.

The insurance company sat on the rating for 10 days before they came to a number so how they can say that they rushed the check is beyond me and wrong! My case workers excuse was, she can’t get ahold of the insurance company by email or phone. These are claim adjusters thar they deal with on a daily basis and are on a first name basis. Please. I have emailed her, called her and begged her for my check. It has fallen in deaf ears. I have told her I am in tears and desperate for the money owed to me. They don’t care at all. I will never suggest anyone use this Lawfirm. I would add more but it would be a novel by the time I was finished. Bottom line?

They are rude, they lie and they are only in this for the money. If your case is not with much, you are treated like crap. They lie and blame you when you get upset because they don’t get back to you. Unreal! They are horrible! Absolutely horrible! I will make sure that I let unsuspecting people know about how bad this Lawfirm is. I have a lot of followers on social media and much are local Use Richard Harris instead. They are fantastic!’

Dear Iekoop,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback to our firm. We strive to provide exemplary service to all of our clients and regret when these standards are not met.

In your case, we must respectfully disagree with many of the points you raise. At your initial consultation, you were able to visit with me and my staff for over an hour. Both myself and my staff closely questioned you regarding the facts of your case prior to agreeing to agreeing to take you on as a client at a substantially reduced rate.

Additionally, we were able to help you find medical care despite the fact that you did not have insurance or money to obtain care and we were able to obtain a very favorable settlement for you considering the moderate severity of your injuries.

Furthermore, we were able to negotiate several reductions to your medical bills that resulted in a substantial increase in the amount you ulimately recovered.

Finally, with regard to your concerns about our communications with you regarding your case, our records indicate that we remained in constant contact with you throughout the course of your claim. Certainly there were periods when your case required more intensive communication but these periods were infrequent. Furthermore, according to our records, we attempted to contact you several times, leaving several messages to which we received no response.

Again, we appreciate your choosing our firm after your husband's positive experience with our firm. We do greatly regret that you were not happy your experience with our firm. For over 17 years now, we have helped thousands of clients get fair and zealous representation for their injury and disability claims.

If there is anything we can do, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Sincerely,

John Shook

Possible remedy for your situation

#4Consumer Suggestion

Sun, February 28, 2010

It's not true that you can't "fire"  or terminate an attorney.  All licensed people, whether they are lawyers, doctors, real estate agents etc., have a code of conduct called their "Fiduciary Responsibility."   They have a legal and ethical obligation to communicate with a client and apprise them of the status of their case. Prolonged silence is an unacceptable business practice when it comes to fiduciary responsibility.

It appears that you have kept an excellent communication log of your calls and findings.  It also appears that neither your lawyer nor his firm have initiated any communication to you in almost 6 months. It appears that they do not respond to your inquiries at all.  I believe you have the right to terminate them without compensation based on abandonment.  It only takes a minute to say, "I'm Betty and I'm handling your case now.  This is where we are today."  They don't do that because it is time consuming and they want volume as opposed to quality. They don't need to share the whole saga explaining the internal issues at their law firm. You don't care if the hire and fire 100 people as long as you have someone working on your case. By the way, all of those para legals didn't get promoted to a different department.  Most likely, they quit their jobs due to a high volume of irritated, abandoned clients.

The truth is this.  They have a constantly changing staff so creating voice mail for all of those ever-changing employees is ludicrous.  There are only so many slots available for email in any system and they can't clog up the system.

Contact the Bar Association and one of the news channels that specializes in Consumer Advocacy.  If the law firm won't return your call, they surely will not respond to a reporter. There's nothing worse than seeing your firm mentioned on the local 6 O'clock news as inept, inadeqaute and the poster child of what not to hire when searching for a lawyer. Become pro-ative and stop waiting for them to do something.

Good luck!
