Last October my wife and i went to Italy for our 25th wedding anniversary. During that time we rented the car from Sicily By Car. When renting the car we declined additional insurance as the requested amouny to pay was 1.5 times of the price of car. We had great time an visited many nice places and never had any issues or problems with the car itself. No accidents whatsoever or any other problems.

On our last day we turned the car in at the Rome airport and the first thing the rental agent did is requested us to fill up on gas eventhoug we topped up the gas tank in Rome and the airport is only around 30km away. Also when we picked up the car the fuel level was recorded at 7/8 of the fuel tank so we returned the car with even more fuel than when picked up.

After we refused to pay for any "missing" fuel the agent looked at the paperwork and noticed that we didn't pay for additional insurance. After that he went straight to the front of the car and pointed to the stone chip size of a tip of the pen claiming in very poor English that we have damaged the car and we have to pay for it. The size of the stone chip was so small that i couldn't see it from a foot away and had to lean in to actually see anything.

The agent made me write a quick report and signe few pre-filled forms. This was my first mistake - the forms were in Italian and he said that i was signing in the car - later learned that i actually signed acknowledging the damage.

After few weeks we got a register mail envelope from Italy and to my surprise there was a quick letter stating that they have charged my credit card amount of 750 EUR + 22% VAT tax replacing the whole windshield. The also attached a fotocopy of the "damaged" windshield where i couldn't clearly see the car let alone the actual stone chip. I called my CC and they tried disputing the charges but were given all the paperwork and this time there was a translated copy of the aknowledgment i signed.

Considering everything i know for sure that i will never again rent from Sicily By Car and will recommend everyone else to stay away from them as far as they can. Unfortunatelly i can't prove this but i have a feeling that I'm not the first person paying for this same windshield.

Stay away from SBC.
