I really don't see what you think that they should have done.
The alarm system was put in place by the previous owners. You knew it was there as you stated that you had cancelled it a year and a half ago. You didn't seem to have a problem with the alarm system being there when you stopped the monitoring? If you really thought it was their equipment, why didn't you request that they remove it when you cancelled the service? If you did and they didn't remove it did you ever wonder why or just figured that they were going to be generous enough to let you continue to use it(but unmonitored) for free.
Explain how a person in a call center is supposed to know where the power source is for the Alarm in YOUR residence. Did they install it? Do they have detailed blueprints to tell you where the hookup is? You might as well have asked them to tell you where the flashlight you misplaced last year was.
Explain how a person in a call center is supposed to know if you are the owners of the property. You stopped the monitoring so you are not a customer anymore. They don't have any "passwords" or "codewords" on file for you that you can give them to prove that you are the owner.
One final thing are you 100% sure that someone didn't try and break into the garage? Because the advice that you should call the police was probably pretty sound.
