I received a notice tyo pay up $53.00 for a supposed toll violation.  Fees will be levied if the amount is late, and threats of collection agencies and a hold on my vehicle registration.  The form has a place for paying, but no box for stating why the charges are incorrect.  I can contest the "infraction" but THEY are the final arbiters.

The phony infraction states I failed to pay a toll in a city where I have been for at lest six years.  Can I surmise their character reader at the toll booth needs a washing?  Or is it safer to imagine they have found a lucrative sideline with the weight of the DMV behind it?

I will keep you informed as to how it turns out.

I am dealing with the similar experience with the Expressway South bay CA-125 toll roads. I decided to contact them though VIA email, too outrage to contact them though the customer service center.  As I was looking up South bay Expressway, Google came up with complaints against this company. So I decided to look at the articles that were posted. WOW! I was shocked about the grievances, the complaints goes as far back as 2008. They all had the similar gripe about the company that build the toll trolls. There were posting about people being fined because the companies were off one number/letter. I assuming this company set up camera similar to the red light cameras. The system itself captures an image from the front end of the car and that included a picture of the driver.

The other criticism I heard was related to the design of the Expressway, as most people know there always a turnabout. So if you entered the toll by mistake you can turn around. The designers of the Expressway clearly had inattentions that drivers had no option but to drive though and these generate funds for the company.  The company (SBE) owner Greg Huliszier was the first toll road to get a USDOT TIFIA loan? Wait, it gets better. SBE is proposing to the US bankruptcy Court that it addresses both the reorganization and write-off of debt?  This was their reasoning for filling chapter 11? Hulsizer had 35 years of doing business with the City of San Diego for the expansion of their freeways. That does not include the staff of 50 that are contracted to sweep the roads and mow grass.

With the recent filling chapter 11, Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) Company bought out SBE in 2003 and took over the project. Greg Huliszier in the last three years we have seen heavy decline in the housing treads and unemployment. Hes blaming job market for the last years.. Where has this guy been? Considering that Bush started a war, unemployment was on the raise, there was a trend. He cant expect people to believe that he didnt know how economy was doing? He went on to say: We projection of 60,000 riders a year in peak traffic hours. There on the average 22,600 care travel the road each year. The projected was in the works since 1991 and the project was projected to cost $843 million.

Anyways, what the point? A project costing $843 million dollars was not planed out carefully.  Why?  The collection boxes are difficult to reach, they take exact change How many drivers currently have $3.50 in quarters?  The toll booth was designed for the average car, not truck or SUVs. Then their mechanical failure to do man made or the system itself.

Then theres the design of toll roads. As most had experienced with tolls roads, there are turnabouts for entering the toll by mistake. Which happens a lot, considering were preoccupied. So in ending, from everything that I have read about the project, the fines are another way for this CEO make money from his ignorance about this project. Its a scam.

We're happy to correct errors...

Hello Jim. Sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately, technology isnt perfect and sometimes when a photo is taken of a license plate, the numbers or letters are read or entered incorrectly in our system. This type of error is straightforward and easily proven - the toll violations team will go back and review the day/time of the infraction and look at the license plate in question to verify. There are folks who choose to evade tolls, which is why we have the video surveillance system in place. Its rare, and we dont like to do it, but when someone accrues many violations, it does constitute a hold on their registration through the DMV. Like I said, this is rare and most violations never escalate to this point.

In your second paragraph, you state The phony infraction states I failed to pay a toll in a city where I have been for at least six years. If you meant to say in a city where you have NOT been then it could, indeed, be a simple mistake.  It sounds like youve
taken the proper action by filling out the back of the violation notice, so you should
receive a letter in the mail in the next week or so with the result.  In cases where its
determined to be an error with the license-plate reader, your toll violations will be
removed.  You can also call our Customer Service Center to check on the status of your
request. Were open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be reached at
619-661-7070. Sometimes mistakes happen, but were looking forward to correcting it
for you.
