I mailed my Toshiba laptop computer to get it repaired in early July 2012 as I had a virus and some software issues.  The UPS Store #4513 did not properly package the computer.  I paid them to package the computer, to send it UPS and I purchased insurance to cover a loss of up to $500.  The compure was damaged in shipment.  I tried to file a claim with the UPS Store for the $500 damages done to the computer in late July 2012 as I had purchased insurance from the UPS Store 4513 when I mailed the package.

They refused to accept the claim and told me that I had to file the claim with UPS directly.  UPS refused to accept the claim of loss.  The repair facility where I mailed the computer contaced investigations  at UPS in late July.  A man named Larry Bennett in investigations was extremely helpful.  He had my wife take the repair estimate to the UPS Store #4513.  She took the repair estimate to the UPS Store #4513.  Shen then took 26 photos of the computer, the box, the packaging, etc.  to the store.

She also e-mailed the photos and repair estimate to the UPS investigator and a lady at MEB -- "Mail Boxes, Etc. -- which licenses the "UPS" stores.  The UPS Stores have the real UPS pick up the packages and deliver the packages.   The lade at MBE filed the claim and advised that it had been accepted.   I mailed the computer to be fixed in early July, 2012.  It is now September 24, 2012 and I have not received the money for the physically damaged computer that I paid to insure when I paid the UPS Store to send the package with my computer to be repaired for softwear problems.

OK -- The  UPS store -- Store # 4513 -- a private corporation doing business as The UPS Store under license from Mail Boxes, Etc. -- which is a subsidiary of UPS -- REFUSED to accept the claim.  They told me to contact UPS.  I did.  UPS said the Store had to initiate the claim.

The repair company filed the complaint and spoke with Larry Bennett in invstigations and got the claim initiated.  The UPS store finally intiated the claim -- after more than 30 days.

A lady named Mary Beth Muro of Mail Boxes, Etc.   intervened - because Larry Bennett told her to.  Mail Boxes, ETC. licenses the UPS Stores, and is wholly owned by UPS.

I presented the repair bill for the new parts and mother board that were damaged due to 1) improper packaging and/or  2) improper shipping.  The invoice was $567 and change.  The computer was worth over $800.   The 26 photos showed the actual damage to the box and the computer.

I finally got the people involved to get the claim moving and voila !  I received a check today for $539.76 -- the $500 damages to the computer and the cost of shipping it !!!   The check came from  MAC Distribution, Inc. d/b/a The UPS Store.  Mr. Bennett and Mary Beth Muro told me that UPS Capital would send a check to the UPS Store and the UPS store would pay me.  That is  what happened.

There is another complaint on this site about UPS Store #4513 and they also refused to process his claim.    That is what really happend.  You are totally mistaken and uninformed.

The missing information is the explanation as to why the claim would not be paid.

The UPS Store's are like your local insurance agencies or car dealerships. They are a privately owned business that is completely separate from corporate. If your car insurance company denies the claim, it's not your agencies fault. Likewise, if companies like UPS or FedEX it is not the shipping facilities fault. That UPS Store shouldn't be the problem, as the claim payout doesn't come from them at all. Unlike stated in the complaint, the UPS Store isn't the shipper or the delivery company. They package when needed and then give it to UPS, FedEx, DHL, or USPS for shipment.

There is no legitimate reason that your claim should take so long. What are they telling you is the delay? The claim can not be denied as those UPS Store locations advertise a guarantee when they package shipment. The UPS Store's aren't the cause of delay in legitimate claims as they aren't the one's that issue the check. They have more to lose if the claim is unapproved than if it is approved. Basically, the only way a claim can't be approved is in the case of fraud. What's stopping a person from taking an old obsolete computer, or laptop with a virus that damaged a motherboard with repair costs beyond what the laptop is worth, and then simply telling a UPS Store to pack it, insure it for $500, and ship it? There is no evidence that that is the case here, but this sort of fraud happens all the time. Another red flag is when person insures something for the full value of $500, then places a claim for $500, and then also wants the item back. That form of double dipping doesn't occur with insurance.

The mention of 26 photos means nothing here until they are attached to this complaint. What was the "physical" damage to the laptop? How was the shipping box damaged and what sort of packaging was inside which would allow outside force to damage the laptop? If the computer was shipped to a repair center, how did you get it back? What is the reason they give you for the delay? Was the claim denied; what did the insurance results form state? Who has the laptop now?

Curious. How did you come up with a $500 value? What was the repair cost, if any? Considering insurace companies only pay up to the value of an item and no more, what was the value of the laptop with the virus and software issues?
