I should have known I was in for trouble when I Googled UHaul and instead of the UHaul main site I found a "UHaul Sucks" website. Despite the online criticism I forged ahead because I live right down the street from a UHaul rental center and I had seen a truck drive by with an advertised price of $19.95. Like a good little child of the internet age I went to the UHaul site and booked my reservation two weeks in advance. I ordered a 14' truck and a small dolly. I was given a "confirmation email" and told that a representative would be calling me in the next 24 hours to give me my pick up location. It actually took almost a week, and two phone calls, to get that pick up location and the location turned out to be on the other side of Chicago (why not the one 1/4 mile down the street?) I begged, pleaded, and almost cried for them to change the location but it was to no avail.

There were no other trucks available at any of the 20 or 30 locations in the city. I end up driving right through the heart of Wriglyville... during a Cubs game... and its SNOWING... in APRIL! Once I get there I wait in line for 1/2 an hour to be treated rudely and told that they did not have the 14' truck I confirmed and that I would not get the small dolly that I had also "reserved" online. I was told that I should run across the parking lot and grab the last large piano dolly because, "It's first come, first serve" despite the fact that I REVERVED IT ONLINE! I have no choice but to upgrade. They bring the truck around for me and its a giant piece of crap! Dents and dings are to be expected, but it was pouring smoke out of the tailpipe, there were french fries and cigarette butts all over the cab. It looked and smelled like someone changed their kid's diaper on the front bench seat. The door handle only worked from the OUTSIDE and the mirrors were so loose that they flopped back and forth in the breeze.

I had furniture to move and five friends waiting, so I sucked it up and drove off into the snowy April afternoon. About four blocks away I made a left turn and the engine stalled pouring out massive amounts of blue smoke. The tank was on fumes. Luckily there was a gas station on the corner where I fueled up (being sure to put in only enough to complete my move.) Upon returning the truck I was treated rudely AGAIN by different personel. I looked around and saw at least four other groups of people having problems with employees. I was charged $67.18 for the six hours I had the truck. A far cry from the "19.95" advertised on the sides of all the UHaul trucks. Two of those hours were spent in Cubs traffic and another $10.00 was spent on gas. I paid and left, too tired to put up a decent fight nad figuring that yelling at the disgruntled emplyee behind the counter would only end me up in the back of a cop car. This is my letter of warning and in some small way, my little bit of revenge.

DO NOT USE UHAUL.
